"White House press secretary Sean Spicer told reporters on Thursday that he thinks it is "appropriate" for the Defense Department inspector general to look into Flynn "if they think there is wrongdoing."

Spicer, in defense of the way Flynn was vetted, stood behind the fact that his clearances were approved under the Obama administration, not acknowledging that Trump was the one who decided to bring him into the administration.

Shortly after the briefing, President Donald Trump himself was asked by a reporter during a memorandum signing if he had any regrets about Michael Flynn."

"The intelligence agency informed President Donald Trump’s former national security adviser in a letter that, as a retired military officer, he was still subject to the Constitution’s emoluments clause, which bars government officials from accepting gifts or payments from foreign governments.

Flynn was notified in the letter that he was prohibited from the "receipt of consulting fees, gifts, travel expenses, honoraria, or salary ... from a foreign government unless congressional consent is first obtained.""

"Today’s leaders can also learn to think in terms of national interest, versus becoming a prisoner to ideology. Of course Nixon was a partisan, and few possessed such seasoned political antennae as he did. But above all, he was a pragmatist, not an ideologue.

When Nixon took office in 1969, America was divided and distressed, not totally unlike today. He was the first president in 120 years—since Zachary Taylor—to be sworn in with both houses of Congress controlled by the opposition party. Yet he worked with Democrats to transform the country and responded to the cries of the time by reaching across the aisle and accomplishing legislative victories with dramatic legacies."

"More than 100 years ago a Republican president worried that America wasn’t doing enough to protect its most treasured wild and sacred places from over-development, mining and drilling. So Congress passed and President Teddy Roosevelt signed the Antiquities Act of 1906, giving presidents the authority to preserve imperiled mountains, forests, cultural treasures and other public lands. Roosevelt condemned the “land grabbers” and “great special interests” who threatened the national lands he protected. “The rights of the public to the [nation’s] natural resources outweigh private rights and must be given its first consideration,” Roosevelt proclaimed. “Our people should see to it that they are preserved for their children and their children’s children forever.”"

 "Day 100:

WikiLeaks releases transcripts of Bill Clinton’s speeches before private industry groups in which he says, “I’m basically a Republican these days” and mocks a single-payer heath care plan similar to one his wife now champions. WikiLeaks also discloses an email from White House chief of staff John Podesta, which seems to indicate that the former president believed his wife’s campaign was “a slow-motion train wreck.” Former presidential candidate Trump tells reporters he “probably” will seek the White House in 2020 and says he’s not sure whether Hillary Clinton is the “legitimate” president. Widespread outcry ensues in the mainstream media."

"Devins said he got the idea for the mural from an image he found on Pinterest that depicted the former first lady as an Egyptian queen. He said he didn't know where it had originated.

Devins, who calls himself an urban planner as well as an artist, is known for painting large outdoor murals and installations around Chicago. He said he chose the mural's location -- across the street from an elementary school Michelle Obama once attended on the city's South Side -- because "I wanted a mural that would serve as an inspiration for the young ladies on Chicago's South Side and young ladies everywhere."

"These systems might sound strange to us, but then our own Electoral College system looks downright exotic, not to say mystifying, to most other democracies. If you measure these overseas examples against our system of nominating and electing presidents, you can see just how much the rules of the game matter. This even extends to primaries: Had the Republicans been operating by the Democratic Party’s rules—no winner-take-all contests, hundreds more unbound “superdelegates”—Trump’s path to the nomination would have been much harder. And if we allocated electoral votes by congressional district, the 2012 race would have been much closer; Mitt Romney won 226 districts to Obama’s 209.

It’s a lesson at the heart of politics, one as clear as it is overlooked in so much political analysis: the rules of the road are often the most critical factor in determining who wins. Presidents who trumpet their victories and claim a mandate should be careful what they’re claiming: Often it’s the rules, as much as the people, that put them there."

"The reality is that “big change” is likely to come with or without Mélenchon: For the first time in the history of the Fifth Republic, neither the Socialists nor the Republicans — the vaguely center-left and center-right parties, respectively, that have governed France since 1958 — are likely to triumph at the ballot box. The contest will probably be a face-off between political outsiders: the independent Macron, the far-right Le Pen and, possibly, the communist Mélenchon.

Despite their ideological opposition, there are certain similarities between the platforms of Le Pen and Mélenchon. Both favor versions of economic protectionism to bolster a strong French state, and both would ultimately like to see France exit the E.U. — albeit for different reasons. Le Pen sees Europe as a threat to France’s sovereignty and national identity; Mélenchon views Europe as an oppressive neoliberal regime that has forgotten the poorest members of society."

" In a 101-page order on Saturday, Judge Baker embraced arguments by the eight prisoners whose executions had been scheduled, plus one other death row inmate, that Arkansas’s reliance on midazolam, a sedative, as an execution drug posed a risk to their constitutional rights.

“The threat of irreparable harm to the plaintiffs is significant: If midazolam does not adequately anesthetize plaintiffs, or if their executions are ‘botched,’ they will suffer severe pain before they die,” Judge Baker, an appointee of President Barack Obama, wrote. She added that the men had “shown a significant possibility that they will succeed on the merits of their method of execution claims based on midazolam.”

"The fact that Trump chose the least aggressive option available suggests that the principal audience for the strikes was not in Damascus or Moscow, but in the United States. In this reading, the missile strike was an ideal means for the commander in chief to avoid the opprobrium that his predecessor experienced for opting not to strike in 2013 after Assad’s first chemical weapons attack and instead work with Russia to remove Syrian chemical weapons stocks. Given Trump’s compulsive need for adulation and his desire to criticize former President Barack Obama and contrast himself with the 44th president, the strike may have been a foregone conclusion, whatever Trump had said earlier about staying out of Syria.

So was the strike political kabuki, nonproliferation norm enforcement on the cheap, both or something more? As the days passed, figuring out what the attack meant became more and more difficult as administration spokesmen put out confusing and often contradictory messages, sometimes even multiple times a day."

"Trump administration officials describe the situation as more dangerous than in the past, because of the progress North Korea has made in its nuclear weapon and missile programs and because of the hostility on both sides. But U.S. officials said no decision has been made about how to respond to any new test — nuclear or ballistic — by North Korea.

While officials do not rule out other actions, they also stress their desire to ensure that the situation does not escalate out of control. Pentagon officials denied recent media reports that the Trump administration is ready to launch a preemptive strike if North Korea appears to be about to conduct a nuclear test."

"That event, on July 9, 1776, has been cleaned up in memory. Nineteenth-century images of it depict festive crowds (including women in hoop skirts), but in reality it was “a bunch of soldiers and sailors,” Mr. Stephenson said, led by an artillery officer, Capt. Oliver Brown, who was so embarrassed it took him decades to admit it. “We tend to think there was a script we were all speaking from, but the reality was messy,” Mr. Stephenson said. “I guess we might be considered a little bit critical of originalism in that sense.”

The museum, which grew out of the collection of the Valley Forge Historical Society, displays about 500 objects, from the expected muskets, military uniforms and teapots to more touchingly human ones, like a pair of baby shoes made from a British redcoat that a soldier in the Continental Army brought home after the war — beating swords into footwear, if you will."
