Position éditoriale dans le San Francisco Chronicle:
Yet the toll from the spill hasn't been assessed. Swaths of oil-coated coastline haven't recovered. Recovery payments are slow in coming to workers, residents and businesses damaged by the spill. The environmental impact will take years to measure, not simply on a one-year anniversary date.
Most disturbing of all is Washington's amnesia. Drilling advocates are making the case for more rigs in Arctic waters off Alaska and along the Southern California coast. Money for Gulf Coast restoration has stalled along with additional safety steps recommended by post-spill study panels.
Oil drilling should remain part of the nation's energy strategy. But it must be crafted from the hard lessons of the gulf spill. A history lesson is being ignored.
