"Standing over the letter, one would never know its unique story. Worth millions at auction, reading it unveils that it stands as a testament to religious freedom in America. But as it stares up, idly sitting there, the stories of “erotic” behavior, twisted ownership and historic encounters are lost on those lucky enough to see it.

The primary spirit of the letter is clear – the United States government will assure religious freedom, giving “to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance.”

George Washington wrote those words in a 1790 letter to the the congregation of a synagogue in Newport, Rhode Island. He was hoping to reassure the congregation that the budding government of the United States would allow free expression to all religions. Since then, Jews in America have flourished.

The letter is addressed “To the Hebrew Congregation in Newport, Rhode Island,” but it is kept from public view, which hurts and angers those who think private ownership defies the letter’s original sentiment."

"Has any piece of legislation had a more intoxicating effect on the American imagination than the 18th Amendment? That was the law that banned the manufacture and sale of alcohol from 1920 until its repeal, in 1933. Prohibition helped put the roar into the Roaring ’20s: speakeasies, hip flasks, bootleggers, bathtub gin, Al Capone. It proved to be a gold mine for popular culture, too: the original “Scarface,’’ “Some Like It Hot,’’ “The Untouchables,’’ and on and on.

Yet this is a tricky subject for a documentary - let alone one that extends over three nights and runs 5 1/2 hours, as Ken Burns and Lynn Novick’s “Prohibition’’ does. It doesn’t faze them, though. The series presents an often-engrossing look at a unique The ’20s marked the birth of modern mass media, which means there’s a lot of material to be drawn on: newsreels, radio broadcasts, tabloid front pages, let alone countless photographs for Burns to pan over in his trademark fashion. Yet the era’s familiarity threatens to make any examination of it seem cliched and/or tired. And a serious treatment is really asking for trouble. Show all the blazing tommy guns and shuttered breweries you like, but underlying the battle between dries and wets was a set of conflicts far harder to present visually: country vs. city, native vs. immigrant, evangelical vs. secular. Those conflicts are inherently abstract, yet they defined Prohibition - and some of them remain as vexing today as they were 90 years ago.cultural moment in America, when high-mindedness was in the saddle yet lawlessness was never so pervasive. “Prohibition’’ starts Sunday on Channel 2, continues Monday, and concludes Tuesday.

From owners John Henry, Tom Werner and Larry Lucchino:
“We met with Terry Francona, Theo Epstein and Ben Cherington Friday morning to discuss the 2011 season, ways to improve the club in the future, and Tito’s status. During the meeting, Tito, Theo and Ben agreed that the Red Sox would benefit from an improved clubhouse culture and higher standards in several areas. Tito said that after eight years here he was frustrated by his difficulty making an impact with the players, that a different voice was needed, and that it was time for him to move on. After taking time to reflect on Tito’s sentiments, we agreed that it was best for the Red Sox not to exercise the option years on his contract.
We have enormous respect, admiration and appreciation for Tito and the job that he did for eight years, including two World Series Championship seasons and five playoff appearances. His poise during the 2004 post-season was a key factor in the greatest comeback in baseball history, and his place in Red Sox history will never be forgotten. We wish him only the best going forward.”

From Theo Epstein:
“Tito and I didn’t know each other when he was hired eight years ago, but over time we developed not only a great working relationship but also a personal friendship that will always be important to both of us. He proved to be an unflappable leader for our major league club, displaying consistency, calmness, hard work, thoughtfulness, a sense of humor, and faith in the players even at the most difficult of times. Without Tito’s commitment over eight years, we would not be the organization we are today. Nobody at the Red Sox blames Tito for what happened at the end of this season; we own that as an organization. This year was certainly a difficult and draining one for him and for us. Ultimately, he decided that there were certain things that needed to be done that he couldn’t do after eight years here, and that this team would benefit from hearing a new voice. While this may be true, his next team will benefit more than it knows from hearing Tito’s voice. I will miss seeing Tito every day in the manager’s office, and I wish him and his family nothing but the best in their next chapter.”

From Terry Francona:
“We met this morning to look back on the 2011 season and to consider the future of the Boston Red Sox, including my involvement with the club. I passed along my frustrations at my inability to effectively reach the players. After many conversations and much consideration, I ultimately felt that, out of respect to this team, it was time for me to move on. I’ve always maintained that it is not only the right, but the obligation, of ownership to have the right person doing this job. I told them that out of my enormous respect for this organization and the people in it, they may need to find a different voice to lead the team.
In my eight seasons as manager of the Boston Red Sox, I have developed a tremendous appreciation for Red Sox Nation. This is a special place with some of the most knowledgeable and passionate fans in all of baseball. They packed Fenway Park for every game and because of them, I had a special sense of pride coming to work every day. I want to thank John, Tom, Larry and Theo for giving me the opportunity to manage this team through some of the most successful years in this franchise’s history. I wish the entire organization and all of Red Sox Nation nothing but the very best.”

Red Sox: congédier Francona serait une erreur (Boston Globe)

Le meilleur à Boston depuis très longtemps... Qui va le récupérer?

"Whether word comes during a press conference or that old transparent public relations stand-by for bad news, a press release late on a Friday afternoon, there is no doubt it will be spun as a mutual decision. Maybe there will be some truth there. Maybe Francona is tired of this city, certain whiny and oblivious players, the effects it has on his health. He’s certainly tired of something; he wears the stress on his face. Maybe he’s decided this is for the best, too.

But I refuse to believe he felt this way a month ago, when the Red Sox had a legitimate claim as a championship contender. Oh, we know how it came to this -- the Red Sox suffered a collapse for the ages this September, one that dragged on right down until the final batter of the final inning of the final game of the season. You know the timeline. On September 1, the Red Sox were in first place in the American League East, nine games up in the wild-card race on the Tampa Bay Rays. Today, phenom Matt Moore takes the mound for the Rays in Game 1 against the Rangers, while the Red Sox settle in to the offseason as a punch line for the ages.

Still, the magnitude and speed of the collapse doesn’t explain how it came to this, how Francona went from as secure in his job as any manager could possibly be to a former employee of the Boston Red Sox in the matter of a month. The fallout is as ridiculous as the fall itself. You don’t abandon the best manager you’ve ever had in these grim circumstances. You support him, embolden him, while also telling him what he can improve upon."

"Terry Francona has left Fenway Park. So have John Henry and Tom Werner.

And, still, there is no word on Francona’s fate.

According to a source, the mutual plan entering this morning’s meeting was that the Red Sox and Francona (AP photo) would part ways after an eight-year partnership, and that is unlikely to change, even if nothing is announced today.

Francona’s multiyear contract includes two club option years for 2012 ($4.25 million) and 2013 ($4.5 million) or a $750,000 buyout. Francona has led the Red Sox to five playoff appearances and two World Series title since he replaced Grady Little before the 2004 season. His career mark with the Red Sox is 744-552."

Theo Epstein: "“John Henry, Tom Werner, Larry Lucchino, Ben Cherington and I met with Terry Francona this morning at Fenway Park to exchange thoughts and information on the 2011 season and discuss areas for improvement going forward. We all plan on taking some time to process the thoughts expressed in the meeting. There are no immediate plans for an announcement.”"

"A missile fired from an American drone aircraft in Yemen on Friday killed Anwar al-Awlaki, the radical American-born cleric who was a leading figure in Al Qaeda’s affiliate in this country, according to an official in Washington.

Many details of the strike were unclear, but the official said that the drone fired a Hellfire missile and killed Mr. Awlaki, whom the United States had been hunting in Yemen for more than two years. Yemen’s Defense Ministry confirmed Mr. Awlaki’s death.

It appeared to be the first time in the United States-led war on terrorism since the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks that an American citizen had been deliberately targeted and killed by American forces. It was also the second high-profile killing of an Al Qaeda leader in the past five months under the Obama administration, which ordered the American commando raid that killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan last May.

Yemen’s official news agency, Saba, reported that the attack had also killed Samir Khan, an American citizen of Pakistani origin who was the editor of Inspire, Al Qaeda’s English-language Internet magazine.

Both Yemeni and American officials called the strike a significant success in the campaign to weaken Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, a group American officials believe to be the most dangerous Qaeda affiliate.

The Obama administration has escalated military and intelligence operations in Yemen, and the White House decision to make Mr. Awlaki a top priority to be hunted down and killed was controversial, given his American citizenship."

"GOP presidential candidate Jon Huntsman's campaign engaged in a terse Twitter battle with real estate mogul Donald Trump on Thursday.

MSNBC's First Read details how the 140-characters-or-less conflict unfolded. While Rick Perry and Mitt Romney have met with Trump directly, and Herman Cain plans to do so next week, Huntsman has demonstrated minimal interest in courting the billionaire businessman.

On Monday, Huntsman's spokesman, Tim Miller, made several quips about Trump's meetings with GOP rivals, making clear that Huntsman would not be coming to New York to seek Trump's support. Two days later, Fox News released a poll, which showed that the Donald's endorsement would have a more negative than positive impact on GOP hopefuls.

With that combination in hand, Trump fired back at Huntsman, tweeting from his official account on Thursday: "@JonHuntsman has zero chance of getting the nomination. Whoever said I wanted to meet him? Time is money and I don't waste mine."

Recent numbers have painted a poor picture for the former Utah governor, who was on the brink of exclusion from the upcoming Oct. 18 CNN debate in Las Vegas. But as The Hill notes, Huntsman pulled together 4 percent in that Wednesday Fox News poll, sealing his eligibility for the next Republican television rumble.

Poll numbers aside, Huntsman's campaign was quick to strike back at Trump. Miller delivered a reply Thursday, tweeting: "@JonHuntsman isn't wasting his time w/ Presidential Apprentice. His focus is on real solutions to fix our economy.""

"First lady Michelle Obama did some discount shopping at Target on Thursday. An AP photographer snapped a picture of the first lady, who was somewhat disguised wearing a grey Nike baseball cap and sunglasses, pushing a red shopping cart inside the retailer’s Alexandria, Va., store.

The White House wouldn’t say what Obama purchased, referring to the trip as a personal activity. “It is not uncommon for the first lady to slip out to run an errand, eat at a local restaurant or otherwise enjoy the city outside the White House gates,” communications director Kristina Schake said in a statement.

Back in May, Obama said that she missed making trips to the store. She joked, “I could go to Target, but it would really mess up everyone else’s shopping experience.”

Update: The first lady picked up "dog food and treats for Bo" at Target, according to "The Today Show.""

Chris Christie 2012: qu'est-ce qui le freine?

"Let’s say Chris Christie decides to run for president – then what?

It’s a question that has occurred to Christie and his circle of intimates — and they’ve begun sketching a plan in the case the governor goes forward with a run.

They understand that all the enthusiasm and pleading in some Republican quarters for a Christie candidacy obscures the fact that the New Jersey governor would immediately have to scale the side of a steep and unforgiving political mountain.

With the initial primary and caucus states poised to move up their contests to January, an October announcement means that Christie would immediately confront two questions of some urgency: where would he compete and how would he get on the ballot in an array of states coming in rapid succession.

Those decisions have to be made and action needs to be taken while also handling myriad other demands — all of it on the fly.

While Christie’s camp is staying mum, the governor is aware, according to top Republicans and donors, that the hour is growing late. He has to decide what to do within the week — and below are the issues he’d have to address."

"It could easily force the United States back into recession and become the issue on which the 2012 elections turn. But the national political press has all but ignored it, and none of the GOP's Presidential hopefuls have been asked about it in any of their endless series of debates.

The European monetary union is on the verge of collapse. In the wake of 2008's global financial crisis, several countries on the Euro have amassed crushing debt burdens and seen their economies stall or buckle. And now the severity of their problems, combined with political paralysis in the union's more stable countries, threatens to bring the whole system down.

If that happens -- and many analysts say its a question of when, not if -- it will plunge all of Europe into financial crisis. But that will have far reaching consequences around the globe, including in the United States, and it hasn't widely sunk in that it could break our meager recovery and weigh heavily on Presidential politics next year.

Several weeks ago, Washington Post blogger Dylan Matthews wrote a helpful summary of the differences between the debt crises in various Eurozone countries -- specifically Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece, and Spain or PIIGS. Of those countries, Greece, which was particularly profligate during the boom years and can't plausibly pay off its debts, is in the most dire shape. But all of them are teetering, the banks and countries that lent them money are heavily exposed, and fixing the problem would likely require healthier economies in northern Europe to bear the losses. If things start to unwind -- if Greece defaults and leaves the union, the other PIIGS countries will likely domino and Europe will be plunged into the economic abyss.

The other option is for healthier Euro countries to basically provide Greece with massive amounts of assistance for years -- an option that's not politically palatable.

Barry Eichengreen, a U.C. Berkeley economics professor who recognized flaws in the structure of the Euro before this crisis, says the doomsday scenario can be averted, but only via a series of complicated steps that European leaders don't seem entirely prepared to make."

"But perhaps we give too little attention to the basic notion that our politicians are also a reflection of the public they represent. As the old saying goes, we get the president we deserve -- and usually the Congress, too. In truth, our fractured politics are due in no small part to a fractured country -- one in which consensus and moderation are disappearing. With apologies to President Truman: the buck stops here.

Those of us who are older -- born somewhere close to midcentury -- grew up in an America where there was a general consensus that the United States was a great nation, that you could be a success if you worked hard and played by the rules, that government had a positive role to play when trouble hit, and that politics must stop at the water's edge as we united against dangerous enemies. But with Vietnam, the tumult of the '60s and '70s, Watergate and more, our sense of common purpose began collapsing.
Listen for a moment to three of the smartest observers in the country who have weighed in this week on the collapse. In this week's New York Magazine, columnist Frank Rich argues that by the late 1960s, "the bipartisan national consensus over the central role of government -- which had held firm through the Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson administrations -- was kaput. The Reagan revolution was in the wings."
We also began to lose faith in ourselves and our values. In an interview with the Financial Times early this week, Professor Michael Porter of the Harvard Business School chimed in with pained observations about what is happening to American competitiveness: "This is shocking for the U.S. If you go back 100 years, you find that the U.S. was a huge pioneer in public education. ... The U.S. was a real pioneer in creating a national, very deep university system. ... The U.S. was a pioneer in the interstate highway system. ... We stepped to the plate in the past and made very, very bold investments in the fundamental environment for competitiveness. But right now, we can't seem to agree on any of these things."
Or listen to William Galston, who was instrumental in helping President Clinton bridge the divides in politics. In the New Republic, he argues that the middle is shrinking in politics. In 1992, he points out, Gallup found that 43% of respondents identified themselves as moderates, 37% as conservatives, and 17% as liberals. In 2009, conservatives and liberals were each up 4% and moderates were down by 7%."

Fidel Castro se moque d'Obama

Dire qu'il y a 4 ou 5 ans on le disait mourant...

"President Barack Obama is “being stupid,” former Cuban president Fidel Castro wrote in a new opinion piece on Thursday.

In his latest column of “reflections” on a Cuban government website, Castro attacked Obama’s policy toward Cuba and declared that his country will reform in the future — but not because of pressure from the United States, Reuters reported.

“Many things will change in Cuba, but they will change by our own effort and in spite of the United States,” he wrote. “Maybe before that empire falls.”

Castro mocked Obama for his comment on Wednesday that if the U.S. sees “positive movement then we will respond in a positive way.”

“How nice! How intelligent!” Castro wrote. “So much kindness has not permitted him still to understand that 50 years of blockade and of crimes against our homeland have not been able to break our people.”

Castro also accused Obama of “being stupid” regarding the case of five Cuban agents imprisoned in the United States for spying. The U.S. has held the agents since 1998, and one of the spies is set to be released next week, according to Reuters. He will remain in the U.S. for three more years on probation.

Cuba has said the agent could be in danger from anti-Castro Cubans, and should be returned immediately to the country.

“Such is how the empire responds to the growing global call for the freedom of (the agents),” Castro wrote. “If it were not that way, the empire would cease to be the empire and Obama would cease being stupid.”

Red Sox 2011: "Best team ever"?

"Best Team Ever? Try Worst Chokers Ever. Or Most Unlikable Team Ever. Or Team That Once and for All Makes the Patriots [team stats] No. 1 in Boston . . . Forever.

The Red Sox were euthanized by the Orioles last night when $142 million man Carl Crawford failed to catch a sinking liner in the ninth, allowing the O’s to walk off with a 4-3 victory.

Meanwhile, the indefatigable Rays — who are everything the Red Sox are not — pulled out a miraculous 8-7 victory over the Yankees after trailing 7-0 in the eighth, when Evan Longoria blasted a walkoff homer in the 12th.

The Red Sox had a chance to force a one-game playoff in Tampa today regardless of the Rays’ fireworks, but they managed to screw that up in appropriately pitiful fashion, blowing a 3-2 lead in the ninth, in part because shortstop Marco Scutaro inexplicably stopped running a la Luis Aparicio in 1972, and then with finality when closer Jonathan Papelbon [stats] couldn’t protect a 3-2 lead in the ninth.

As far as we know the Sox boarded a plane home for Boston, but slinking would have been a more acceptable method of transportation.

This one rivals 1978. It rivals 1986. It rivals anything they’ve done in their history, which we thought we’d rewritten, but we’re now reliving.

The collapse to end all collapses was a horror show from start to finish. The Red Sox began September in first place, a game and a half ahead of the Yankees and nine games ahead of the Rays."

"Federal authorities today arrested and charged a 26-year-old Ashland man with plotting to damage the Pentagon and US Capitol with a remote-controlled aircraft filled with C-4 plastic explosives.

Rezwan Ferdaus, a US citizen, was also charged with attempting to provide material support and resources to a foreign terrorist organization, specifically to Al Qaeda, in order to carry out attacks on US soldiers stationed overseas, the US attorney’s office said in a statement.

He apppeared for an initial status hearing today in US District Court in Worcester. Prosecutors are seeking that he be detained without bail until his trial. A detention hearing will be held at 3 p.m. Monday.

“The conduct alleged today shows that Mr. Ferdaus had long planned to commit violent acts against our country,” US Attorney Carmen Ortiz said. “Thanks to the diligence of the FBI and our many other law enforcement partners, that plan was thwarted.”

She added, “I want the public to understand that Mr. Ferdaus’ conduct, as alleged in the complaint, is not reflective of a particular culture, community or religion. In addition to protecting our citizens from the threats and violence alleged today, we also have an obligation to protect members of every community, race, and religion against violence and other unlawful conduct.”

The statement said that the public was never in danger from the explosive devices, which were controlled by undercover FBI employees.

Ferdaus also was closely monitored as his alleged plot developed and undercover agents were in frequent contact with him.

Federal prosecutors said that Ferdaus, a Northeastern University graduate with a physics degree, began planning to commit violent “jihad” against the US in early 2010."

"Europeans are well aware of the seriousness of their ongoing debt crisis. But they don't, it seems, like to receive lectures from other countries -- especially the United States, which is struggling to deal with its own mountain of debt.

On Tuesday, German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble curtly rejected recent American criticism of Europe's approach to solving its debt crisis. "I don't think Europe's problems are America's only problems," said Schäuble, who has become increasingly sharp-tongued as the euro crisis deepens. "It's always easier to give other people advice."
Schäuble was referring to strongly worded comments made by US President Barack Obama and US Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner in recent days. At an event in California on Monday, Obama warned Europeans that their inaction was "scaring the world." The Europeans, he said, "have not fully healed from the crisis back in 2007 and never fully dealt with all the challenges that their banking system faced. It's now being compounded by what's happening in Greece." He continued: "They're going through a financial crisis that is scaring the world, and they're trying to take responsible actions, but those actions haven't been quite as quick as they need to be.""
