"NRA leaders will announce an “unprecedented campaign” to spend “tens of millions” this year on a voter-registration drive called “All In” that will give way in the fall to a massive mobilization effort. Obama “has spent a lifetime voting against the Second Amendment — voting for gun bans [and] voting for ammo bans,” said Andrew Arulanandam, the NRA’s director of public affairs said of Obama. “As a state legislator in Chicago, [Obama] voted against the right of residents to defend themselves while in their own home. He’s no political dummy.”
Arulanandam added: “He’s done the political calculations. In his second term, he doesn’t have to worry about running for reelection.” The NRA campaigned for “Stand Your Ground” laws — the first of which was enacted in Florida in 2005, but is now on the books in over 30 states — that George Zimmerman is expected to defend himself against charges that he killed the 17-year-old Martin. But it has not made a statement on the case, and a federal debate over “Stand Your Own Ground” is strangely lacking since there is no federal equivalent of the state laws.
“We don’t know all the facts to this case, and neither does the media,” Arulanandam said. “We have made an effort to not speak until we know all the facts, and we will not speak until we know all the facts.”
Democrats argue it is Romney, the likely Republican presidential nominee, who is instead soft on the gun issue. They hope to portray him as having flip-flopped on gun issues from his time as Massachusetts governor, and “pandering” to gun owners as the likely GOP presidential nominee.
“The President’s record makes clear that he supports and respects the Second Amendment, and we’ll fight back against any attempts to mislead voters,” said Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt. “Mitt Romney is going to have difficulty explaining why he quadrupled fees on gun owners in Massachusetts then lied about being a lifelong hunter in an act of shameless pandering. That varmint won’t hunt.”"
