"Hinckley attempted to assassinate Reagan outside the Washington Hilton on March 30, 1981, but was found not guilty by reason of insanity and ordered detained for treatment at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington.
Reagan was shot in the chest in the attack, but recovered. Three other men were wounded: White House Press Secretary James Brady, who was hit in the head and paralyzed; D.C. police officer Thomas Delahanty and Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy. Brady went on to become a living symbol of the gun-control movement until his death in 2014."
