"House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) didn’t hide that fact Friday after leaving a meeting with Obama, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.). Boehner said he won’t budge on adding revenues as part of a sequester solution. Instead, Republicans want a replacement solely based on spending cuts.
“But let’s make it clear that the president got his tax hikes on Jan. 1,” Boehner said outside of the White House. “This discussion about revenue, in my view, is over. It’s about taking on the spending problem here in Washington.”
The president will continue to hammer away at Republicans on the sequester, as he did Saturday in his weekly radio address. His aides released copies of letters that the administration had sent to governors detailing the extent of the cuts in their states. And the White House is expected to highlight examples of the real-world impact of the sequester in the coming weeks and months.
But he won’t allow it to overtake his agenda, officials said.
Obama is hoping that a bipartisan group of senators reach agreement on an immigration overhaul bill this month, and he plans to keep up his push for a vote on gun control legislation. In remarks Friday from the White House briefing room, Obama said he would also remain focused on the priorities detailed in his State of the Union address: expanding early childhood education, raising the minimum wage, reforming the voting system and boosting infrastructure funding.“We can’t let political gridlock around the budget stand in the way of other areas where we can make progress,” he said.
