Obama et Jason Collins: ‘I Told Him I Couldn’t Be Prouder’
"One of the extraordinary measures of progress that we've seen in this country has been the recognition that the LGBT community deserves full equality, not just partial equality, not just tolerance, but a recognition that they're fully part of the American family. And given the importance of sports in our society, for an individual who's excelled at the highest levels in one of the major sports to say, 'This is who I am, I'm proud of it. I'm still a great competitor. I'm still 7 feet tall and can bang with Shaq and deliver a hard foul.' And you know, for, I think, a lot of young people out there who are gay or lesbian who are struggling with these issues, to see a role model like that who is unafraid, I think this is a great thing. This is just one more step in this ongoing recognition that we treat everybody fairly and everybody's part of a family and we judge people on the basis of their character and performance and not their sexual orientation. I'm very proud of him."

"The FBI has interviewed "Misha," an elusive figure whose name has surfaced in the Boston bombing investigation, a U.S. government official told CNN on Monday.
Investigators spoke with the man in Rhode Island, the source said, after reports surfaced suggesting that members of the suspected bombers' family blame a "Misha" for radicalizing alleged bombing mastermind Tamerlan Tsarnaev.
The man, whose real name is Mikhail Allakhverdov, denies ever encouraging a violent take on Islam and says he was not Tamerlan's teacher, according to a New York Review of Books writer who says he interviewed Misha.
"He began telling me he cooperated with the FBI" and had handed over his computer and cell phone, reporter Christian Caryl told CNN on Monday." Allakhverdov insisted he had "nothing to do with radicalization," Caryl said.

Jason Collins des Celtics de Boston: "I'm black and I'm gay"
"Why am I coming out now? Well, I started thinking about this in 2011 during the NBA player lockout. I'm a creature of routine. When the regular season ends I immediately dedicate myself to getting game ready for the opener of the next campaign in the fall. But the lockout wreaked havoc on my habits and forced me to confront who I really am and what I really want. With the season delayed, I trained and worked out. But I lacked the distraction that basketball had always provided.
The first relative I came out to was my aunt Teri, a superior court judge in San Francisco. Her reaction surprised me. "I've known you were gay for years," she said. From that moment on I was comfortable in my own skin. In her presence I ignored my censor button for the first time. She gave me support. The relief I felt was a sweet release. Imagine you're in the oven, baking. Some of us know and accept our sexuality right away and some need more time to cook. I should know -- I baked for 33 years. When I was younger I dated women. I even got engaged. I thought I had to live a certain way. I thought I needed to marry a woman and raise kids with her. I kept telling myself the sky was red, but I always knew it was blue.
I realized I needed to go public when Joe Kennedy, my old roommate at Stanford and now a Massachusetts congressman, told me he had just marched in Boston's 2012 Gay Pride Parade. I'm seldom jealous of others, but hearing what Joe had done filled me with envy. I was proud of him for participating but angry that as a closeted gay man I couldn't even cheer my straight friend on as a spectator. If I'd been questioned, I would have concocted half truths. What a shame to have to lie at a celebration of pride. I want to do the right thing and not hide anymore. I want to march for tolerance, acceptance and understanding. I want to take a stand and say, "Me, too."

Bengladesh: l'espoir s'estompe
"For five days after the building collapsed, rescue teams had retrieved corpses and survivors, but not her son and daughter. Tears on her cheeks, she began to shout: at a soldier sweating beneath a hard hat, at the shattered building, at her god, and finally at her children, calling out their names, beckoning to them, “Today, I’m here! But you haven’t come back!”
Thousands of people surrounded the site on Sunday, watching the huge rescue operation, even as hopes faded that many more victims would be found alive. For nearly 12 hours, rescuers tried to save a trapped woman, lowering dry food and juice to her as they carefully cut through the wreckage trying to reach her. But then a fire broke out, apparently killing the woman, leaving many firefighters in tears.
With national outrage boiling over, Bangladeshi paramilitary officers tracked down and arrested Sohel Rana, the owner of the building, who was hiding near the Indian border, and returned him by helicopter to Dhaka. When loudspeakers at the rescue site announced his capture earlier in the day, local news reports said, the crowd broke out in cheers.

"Access to the area is being restricted until the medical examiner's office completes a health and safety inspection.
"We are cooperating fully with the appropriate authorities to make sure this piece of evidence is removed with care as quickly and effectively as possible," said Sharif El-Gamal, president of Soho Properties, the owner of 51 Park Place.
But the attorney for El-Gamal, Adam Leitman Bailey, questioned whether the piece of the landing gear was planted.
"It is impossible. It was absolutely planted and I'm happy to go on air saying so," he said, adding that thousands of people have protested in the area against the planned community center.
Asked why he thought someone would have planted it, he said: "Let me think, I got over 5,000 hate e-mails. I got sued personally twice. I have blogs against me. So any number of them could have done it."

"The result of this purgatory of isolation was inevitable. Charlie Savage wrote in The Times on Thursday about a protest that ended in a raid on Camp Six, where the most cooperative prisoners are held. A hunger strike in its third month includes an estimated 93 prisoners, twice as many as were participating before the raid. American soldiers have been reduced to force-feeding prisoners who are strapped to chairs with a tube down their throats.
That prison should never have been opened. It was nothing more than Mr. Bush’s attempt to evade accountability by placing prisoners in another country. The courts rejected that ploy, but Mr. Bush never bothered to fix the problem. Now, shockingly, the Pentagon is actually considering spending $200 million for improvements and expansions clearly aimed at a permanent operation.
Polls show that Americans are increasingly indifferent to the prison. We received a fair amount of criticism recently for publishing on our Op-Ed page a first-person account from one of the Guantánamo hunger strikers.
But whatever Mr. Bush says about how comfortable he is with his “tough” choices, the country must recognize the steep price being paid for what is essentially a political prison. Just as hunger strikes at the infamous Maze Prison in Northern Ireland indelibly stained Britain’s human rights record, so Guantánamo stains America’s.

"Scribner, an imprint of Simon & Schuster, typically sells 500,000 copies each year, but in 2013 it has already shipped 280,000 copies, according to the publisher.
E-book sales have been skyrocketing, too: in 2012, about 80,000 e-book copies of “Gatsby” were sold. So far this year, sales have surpassed 125,000.
Those numbers suggest that “The Great Gatsby,” frequently described as the greatest American novel ever, will be among the top-selling books of 2013, a literary palate cleanser to follow 2012, when the American book-buying public gorged on the “Fifty Shades” erotica series.
But Scribner also has high expectations for the movie tie-in edition: it is printing more than 350,000 copies.
The tie-in edition is likely to appeal to “the new reader,” said Nan Graham, the publisher of Scribner.
“The repeat reader is going to buy the classic cover,” she said in an interview. “A person who is more likely to buy the movie tie-in is reading it for the first time. In Walmart, this is the book you’re going to see.”
Cathy Langer, the lead book buyer at the Tattered Cover in Denver, said that by issuing two covers, publishers are trying to reach two audiences that may not overlap."

Bill Clinton et les peintures de George W. Bush:" I think I should keep my suit"
Clinton was referring to Bush's painting of himself in the shower, which surfaced after his family's email accounts were hacked in February. Bush's affinity for painting has been the subject of much fascination in recent months. On Wednesday, the 43rd president said his artistic hobby has changed his life.
Obama et la Syrie: “no option is off the table”
"“Given our own history with intelligence assessments, including intelligence assessments related to weapons of mass destruction,” a senior administration official told reporters Thursday, “it’s very important that we are able to establish this with certainty.”
Obama is already facing the prospect of a military confrontation over Iran’s nuclear program after vowing that he would use all means necessary to prevent the Islamic Republic from developing a nuclear bomb – something the government there has denied pursuing.
Now he must weigh his potential action or inaction in Syria against his policy toward an Iranian government on the lookout for signs of faltering American resolve. A U.S. military action in Syria would open up a new front in the Islamic world, but it could also serve notice to Iran that Obama means what he says when he draws red lines.
There are also options short of direct intervention, likely far more appealing to the president.

Les "First ladys" réunies (photo)
"The outspoken Carter is the member who’s tolerated but hardly beloved. His post-presidential efforts at diplomacy, both sanctioned and freelance, have caused headaches for his successors, and he lacks the chummy relationship the others enjoy with one another. Numerous political veterans of both parties brought up the 2009 Oval Office picture of him with his fellow presidents, standing off to the side and detached from the others, as an apt metaphor. And just hours after the ceremony Thursday, Bill Clinton, trying out his new Twitter account, posted a picture of himself, Obama and Bush 43 in a backstage conversation as Carter stares off in the distance, outside the conversation."

Bush library et héritage historique: "In other words, I'll be dead."
"The 43rd president said he has learned lessons from his predecessors about how to make a mark after leaving the White House.
"You learn that life doesn't end after you're president," Bush said. "In other words, you're going a hundred miles an hour and, and, in my case, we woke up in Crawford and now it's going zero. And so the challenge is how to live life to its fullest.
"In my case, I've chosen to do so outside the limelight. On the other hand, I am confident that when this chapter of our life is finished, that we'll both be able to say that we've advanced the cause of peace and freedom and -- and the human -- and helped improve the human condition."

"The two suspects in the case, Dzokhar Tsarnaev and Tamewrlan Tsarnaev, reportedly arrived in the United States as refugees when they were children, meaning there’s little chance a background check at that point could have caught anything potentially threatening in their past. But the broader system is still being brought up as a concern.
Refugee policy is not a major plank of the immigration bill, which does far more to overhaul the employment and family visa system and to adjust the status of existing undocumented immigrants. But it would add a few tweaks championed by human rights groups that would make it easier for certain immigrants to apply for asylum status.
At a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on immigration reform legislation Tuesday, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) pressed Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano over whether the refugee and asylum visa system was secure, adding he had heard concerns the bill “would weaken asylum law.” Other senators, including Sens. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) and Dick Durbin (D-IL), one of the authors of the immigration bill, also asked Napolitano to elaborate on refugee and asylum procedures in light of the attack.

Ana Montes, l'espionne inconnue
"Like Aldrich Ames and Robert Hanssen before her, Ana Montes blindsided the intelligence community with brazen acts of treason. By day, she was a buttoned-down GS-14 in a Defense Intelligence Agency cubicle. By night, she was on the clock for Fidel Castro, listening to coded messages over shortwave radio, passing encrypted files to handlers in crowded restaurants and slipping undetected into Cuba wearing a wig and clutching a phony passport.
Montes spied for 17 years, patiently, methodically. She passed along so many secrets about her colleagues — and the advanced eavesdropping platforms that American spooks had covertly installed in Cuba — that intelligence experts consider her among the most harmful spies in recent memory. But Montes, now 56, did not deceive just her nation and her colleagues. She also betrayed her brother Tito, an FBI special agent; her former boyfriend Roger Corneretto, an intelligence officer for the Pentagon specializing in Cuba; and her sister, Lucy, a 28-year veteran of the FBI who has won awards for helping to unmask Cuban spies.

"White House press secretary Jay Carney on Monday said emphatically that Boston Marathon bombings suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev will be prosecuted in a civilian court, rebuffing Republicans like Sens. John McCain (R-AZ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) who have argued that he should be treated as an enemy combatant. That won't happen, Carney said at an afternoon press briefing. "He will not be treated as an enemy combatant," Carney said. "We will prosecute this terrorist through our civilian system of justice. Under U.S. law, United States citizens cannot be tried in military commissions."
The 19-year-old Tsarnaev became a U.S. citizen on Sept. 11, 2012. Carney also noted that the federal court system has been used successfully to try, convict and incarcerate innumerable suspected terrorists since 9/11, including Faisal Shahzad, who failed in his 2010 attempt to detonate a bomb in Times Square, and Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the so-called underwear bomber. Both men were sentenced to life in prison after being tried in federal court. "

Terrorisme à Boston et justice: position éditoriale du New York Times
"Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina apparently has a thermal-imaging device for detecting the motivation of the man arrested on suspicion of bombing the Boston Marathon. He and three other Republican lawmakers declared — without the benefit of evidence — that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev should be considered an enemy combatant, not a criminal, and should be held by the military without access to a lawyer or the fundamental rights that distinguish this country from authoritarian regimes.
Mr. Graham’s reckless statement makes a mockery of the superb civilian police work that led to the suspect’s capture, starting with a skillful analysis of video recordings of the marathon. The law enforcement system solved the case swiftly and efficiently, led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and local police, and as shocking as the attack was, there is no reason civilian prosecutors, defense lawyers and courts cannot continue to do their work — especially since they have proved themselves far better at it than the military.
Mr. Tsarnaev is a naturalized American citizen, an inconvenient fact for the pressure-him-at-Gitmo crowd. He cannot be tried in a military commission, a legal system reserved for aliens. Even to be held by the military without trial would require a showing that he is associated with a declared enemy of the United States, such as Al Qaeda or the Taliban. So far there isn’t any visible connection between the Tsarnaev brothers and anyone more malevolent. Their Islamic or Chechen heritage alone is hardly proof of jihadist intent.

Justin Trudeau dans le New York Times
Un topo qui m'avait échappé...
"HE is young, handsome, charismatic and married to a glamorous woman, and he draws overflow crowds at political rallies. He also carries the name of an earlier Canadian political figure who once fit the same description.
Justin Trudeau became the leader of the Liberal Party on Sunday, 45 years and one week after his father, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, claimed a similar political victory. But the parallels between father and son may end there.
If he is to become prime minister like his father, Mr. Trudeau will have to grapple with a name that remains polarizing in Canada and show a skeptical public that he has his father’s substance as well as his flash. He faces a country where political dynasties are rare and, at best, viewed with suspicion. And while his father led the Liberal Party at a high point of its fortunes, Mr. Trudeau will take over a much diminished version that, for the first time in its history, fell into third place during the last federal election.

"President Obama has watched the blood-dimmed tide drowning the ceremony of innocence, as Yeats wrote, and he has learned how to emotionally connect with Americans in searing moments, as he did from the White House late Friday night after the second bombing suspect was apprehended in Boston.
Unfortunately, he still has not learned how to govern.
How is it that the president won the argument on gun safety with the public and lost the vote in the Senate? It’s because he doesn’t know how to work the system. And it’s clear now that he doesn’t want to learn, or to even hire some clever people who can tell him how to do it or do it for him.
It’s unbelievable that with 90 percent of Americans on his side, he could get only 54 votes in the Senate. It was a glaring example of his weakness in using leverage to get what he wants. No one on Capitol Hill is scared of him.

George W. Bush: "l'histoire me jugera"
"Former President George W. Bush, whose presidential library is set to open this week, is done justifying himself. “There’s no need to defend myself,” Bush told USA Today in an interview published Monday. “I did what I did and ultimately history will judge.”
Bush said his library will be a place to “lay out facts,” not to defend his eight-year tenure, which ended with a miserable 34 percent approval rating. The library has an interactive feature where visitors can listen to virtual advisers and then make the same decisions Bush was faced with.
The former president says he refers critics who try to debate him to his 2010 memoir, “Decision Points.”
“Get a sense of what I did and if you still disagree, I understand,” Bush tells them. While Bush insists he has little appetite for debating his tenure, he defended himself extensively in an interview with the Dallas Morning News published last week. President Barack Obama and former Presidents Bill Clinton and George H.W. Bush are scheduled to travel to Dallas for the opening of Bush’s library on Thursday.

'I'll dance again' ... and run the marathon: détermination vous dites?
"“Adrianne,” her mother whispered, “dear, your left foot … it’s gone.” Adrianne, a dance instructor at the Arthur Murray Studio in Park Plaza, was devastated. Though she had known how bad things were, she had hoped trauma surgeons at Boston Medical Center could work a miracle. They were forced to amputate that portion of her left leg below the knee.
It’s been a week since Adrianne and her husband of four years, Air Force Capt. Adam Davis, felt the blast of a second bomb on Boylston Street hit their chests. It left them covered in blood and splayed out on the sidewalk in front of The Forum restaurant.
“For a little while, it could have been two minutes or 20, I guess, everything seemed to go quiet,” Adrianne said during a phone interview with the Herald yesterday from her hospital bed. “I thought we were fine, until I looked down and realized that my left foot was practically detached. That’s when I started screaming my head off.”
Adam Davis, who just returned safely from Afghanistan, pulled off his belt and tightened it above his wife’s frightening wound. He, too, was riddled with shrapnel but managed to drag Adrianne into The Forum.

We got him:Tom Menino maire de Boston
"`We got him' Mayor Menino announces amid cheer
"We got him" Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino declared tonight as overjoyed Watertown residents cheered in the streets as the lone surviving marauding marathon bombing suspect was taken alive.
Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, was captured bleeding in a boat in the backyard of a home on Franklin Street in Watertown. The homeowner spotted blood on the shrink wrap of his boat, looked inside and saw a bloody man and ran inside and called 911, Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis said tonight.
A helicopter with thermal imaging helped SWAT teams identify the spot. There was gunfire at the boat and Tsarnaev was soon captured.

"A classmate confirmed to Buzzfeed that a Twitter account apparently used by suspected bomber Dzokhar Tsarnaev as recently as Wednesday was indeed Tsarnaev's real feed.
The suspect's account, which seemed more interested in rap lyrics, pop culture, and smoking than anything else, featured a number of tweets posted after the April 15 bombing.
This one, posted hours after the attack, references the chorus of Jay-Z's 2001 song "Heart Of The City (Ain't No Love)."

"The family lived in Tokmok, a town of about 55,000 people in northern Kyrgyzstan, near the border with Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz National State Security Committee said in a statement Friday. Kyrgyz officials said the family left the country about 12 years ago for Dagestan in Russia, and after a year there emigrated to the United States.
Many Chechens were deported to Central Asia–mostly Kazakhstan—during World War II because Stalin considered them traitors, sympathetic to the Nazis, even though Chechen men served in the Soviet Army. On Feb. 23, 1944, about 385,000 Chechens were hastily rounded up and deported in cattle trucks or railroad cars. Many died on the way.
On Friday, Kyrgyz officials went to lengths to distance their country from the Boston bombings. “As the suspects left the republic when Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was 8 and Tamerlan Tsarnaev 15, the Kyrgyz National Security Committee considers it inappropriate to link them to Kyrgyzstan,” security officials said, according to the Interfax news agency.
