"The early odds are weighted well in Chicago’s favor. It’s the city the president represented in his first elected office, the place where first lady Michelle Obama spent most of her life and the base for many Obama senior aides, friends and top donors, including Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Obama’s first White House chief of staff. Two of the three founders of the Barack H. Obama Foundation, launched last week to begin the library planning project, are based in Chicago, while the other has ties to Illinois politics.
“Chicago is undeniably a natural fit for the Obama presidential library and museum,” Emanuel said as the foundation launched. “Though we’re excited to welcome the president home, we are not resting on our laurels and will put forward a competitive proposal so that his choice is an easy one.”
The University of Chicago is, of course, the favorite. It’s where Obama taught law and where first lady Michelle Obama worked. Susan Sher, the first lady’s former chief of staff and a longtime Obama friend, is leading the university’s bid, while former Obama strategist David Axelrod heads up his own political institute there. Plenty of others in the first couple’s circle have tight ties to the university.
