"It could be luck. It could be skill": la sécurité depuis 9/11

Des milliards plus tard, pas d'autres attaques majeures. Savoir-faire ou chance?

"But 10 years later, those early grim fears have been largely unrealized.

The federal government has spent hundreds of billions of dollars on homeland security and dramatically reorganized the U.S. counterterrorism apparatus. After a decade long search, the government succeeded in finding and killing Osama bin Laden.

And as the 10-year anniversary of Sept. 11 arrives Sunday, the threat of Al Qaeda in this country, by some measures, appears to have receded. But it hasn’t disappeared altogether.

Once again, the nation was reminded of the threat when authorities announced on Thursday that they had specific and credible, but uncorroborated, information about a possible attack on Washington, D.C., or New York linked to Sunday’s 9/11 10th anniversary. Law enforcement officials were searching for three men, one of whom is believed to be an American citizen, who may have recently entered the country and are plotting an attack with a car or truck bomb.

There has been no terror on U.S. soil on the scale of Sept. 11 or anything close to it. Perhaps more surprisingly, there have been just a few successful domestic attacks, on a much smaller scale, with reported links to Al Qaeda. The most deadly incident was the Fort Hood shooting spree in Texas in 2009 that claimed 13 lives. And, of course, there have been many alerts and threats.

Despite few Al Qaeda successes in the U.S., the terror group hardly went dark abroad after Sept. 11. In Bali in 2002, the group killed 202 people in nightclub bombings. In Madrid in 2004, 192 people died and more than 2,000 were injured in bombings of the city’s train system. In London in 2005, 56 people were murdered in coordinated suicide attacks on the public transportation system."
