MLK memorial: ce sera le 16 octobre!

Le passage d'Irene avait forcé l'annulation de la cérémonie...

"The memorial, which was to have been dedicated Aug. 28, will instead be formally feted Oct. 16, executive architect Ed Jackson Jr. told the Associated Press. A formal announcement is still to come.

The new date doesn’t have quite the resonance of the original that was washed out by Irene. Aug. 28 marked the 48th anniversary of the massive D.C. rally that featured King’s “I Have a Dream” speech - a milestone both in the civil rights movement and in the life of Dr. King.

Oct. 16, on the other hand marks the 16th anniversary of Louis Farrakhan’s “Million Man March” in Washington, an event that did feature King’s son, Martin Luther King III, among its speakers. And Oct. 16 was also the date in 1973 that Maynard Jackson became the first black elected to be the mayor of Atlanta, King’s hometown and the site of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site.

It’s not clear if the dedication is meant to be linked to either event."
