"For all the uncertainty the Republicans face, there is also plenty of opportunity — if they can find the right champion. History suggests that after giving one party two terms in the White House, voters are usually restless for a change.
And if the midterm elections go badly for the Democrats, the political landscape may suddenly look much more favorable for the opposition party — potentially setting off a stampede of candidates to claim the GOP nomination for what would look like a thoroughly winnable race.
The next presidential election is expected to be a testing ground for a new generation of Republican leaders — senators who might include the charismatic Marco Rubio (Fla.), libertarian Rand Paul (Ky.) and tea party gladiator Ted Cruz (Tex.), and much-mentioned governors such as Chris Christie (N.J.), Bobby Jindal (La.), John Kasich (Ohio), Rick Snyder (Mich.), Scott Walker (Wis.) and Mike Pence (Ind.).
