"As expected, Apple’s newest iPhone has broken sales records previously set by the iPhone 4S, as a result of the strong demand that the company saw from its pre-order sales.
In a news statement Monday morning, Apple said the iPhone 5 pre-orders had topped two million in the first 24 hours, which is more than double the record set by the iPhone 4S last year.
Last year, Apple reported that, overall, the iPhone 4S had sold one million pre-orders in the first 24 hours, a figure that the company said it was “blown away” by at the time.
Demand was so high, the company said, that while the “majority of pre-orders” will be delivered to customers at the end of this week, the company has already taken orders that will not ship until October.
AT&T also announced Monday morning that the iPhone 5 had been its “most successful iPhone launch ever.” Customers snapped up more iPhones of this model than of any previous iPhone model, both on its first day of pre-orders and over the weekend.
According to Fortune, there were already folks camped out in front the New York Apple Store on Fifth Avenue Sunday — though all of them were there for promotional reasons.
