"A major credit agency is threatening to downgrade the U.S. debt rating unless Congress acts quickly to raise the debt ceiling.
Fitch Ratings on Tuesday said it would revoke the country’s perfect credit score if there was another protracted struggle over raising the limit.
“In Fitch's opinion, the debt ceiling is an ineffective and potentially dangerous mechanism for enforcing fiscal discipline,” the agency said in a statement.
Fitch said it expects the debt ceiling will be raised before default, but it said even a protracted struggle over the ceiling could lead to a downgrade.
“Protracted debate prior to increasing the debt ceiling is not an exceptional event, but against the backdrop of unprecedentedly large peacetime budget deficits and outstanding debt, any delay in raising the limit would pose ever increasing risks to the ability of the federal government to honour its obligations in a timely fashion,” the agency said.
