Top aides were taken completely off-guard by the announcement, and Huckabee's decision to use his own television show to reveal his intentions suggests that he will not mount a second bid, since he and Fox News could land in legal hot water with the Federal Election Commission if he did so.
Huckabee's top political adviser, Ed Rollins, told the New York Times that he had not heard from the former governor directly but Rollins spoke in the past tense about his presidential prospects.
"There was a tremendous opportunity for him to be a viable, credible candidate," Rollins told the Times' Michael Shear. "I think Mike has got unique talents but he just didn't have the fire in the belly. I can't want it more than the candidate does."
