"The Pentagon said Tuesday the deployment of U.S. ships in the Persian Gulf "will continue as it has for decades," brushing aside an Iranian warning against moving a U.S. aircraft carrier through the Strait of Hormuz. The U.S. Navy operates under international maritime conventions to maintain a constant state of high vigilance in order to ensure the continued, safe flow of maritime traffic in waterways critical to global commerce. Our transits of the Strait of Hormuz continue to be in compliance with international law, which guarantees our vessels the right of transit passage, Pentagon press secretary George Little said, while noting: "No one in this goverment seeks confrontation in the Strait of Hormuz. It's important to lower the temperature." Earlier, Iranian army chief Maj. Gen. Ataollah Salehi warned Washington against moving an unspecified aircraft carrier back into the gulf. "The Islamic Republic of Iran will not repeat its warning," the official IRNA news agency quoted him as saying."
