President Obama on Thursday signed a bill granting himself -- along with George W. Bush and future Presidents -- lifetime Secret Service protection.

The Former Presidents Protection Act of 2012, passed by the House and Senate last month, restores lifetime Secret Service protection of former Presidents and their spouses who did not serve as President prior to January 1, 1997, according to the White House. It also provides protection for children of former Presidents until 16 years of age.

 The law Congress reverses legislation passed in 1997 limiting Secret Service protection to ten years after leaving office.
