"McKinley was in many ways a 19th century president: He was the last Civil War veteran to serve in the nation’s highest office, and was elected with a “front porch campaign,” rarely making appearances beyond his Canton home while running for president. But his presidency was also the first modern one. It was marked by the global expansion of the United States’ political power, and his protective economic policies allowed the American industries that ruled the world throughout the 20th century to take root. Had it not been for his assassination—which triggered an outpouring of grief similar to that 60 years later when John F. Kennedy was killed—and his successor, we might still think of him in that way today."
