 "Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. wrote the opinion striking down the aggregate limits of what an individual may contribute to candidates and political committees.

 The decision did not affect the limit an individual may contribute to a specific candidate, currently $2,600.%% But Roberts said an individual should be able to contribute that much to as many candidates as he chooses, which was not allowed by the donation cap.

“An aggregate limit on how many candidates and committees an individual may support through contributions is not a modest restaint at all,” Roberts wrote. “The government may no more restrict how many candidates or causes a donor may support than it may tell a newspaper how many candidates it may endorse.”

 With Roberts as chief justice, the Supreme Court has never upheld federal campaign finance laws from challenge, a series of decisions that culminated in Citizens United. That has proved to be a ruling deeply unpopular according to polls, and Roberts seemed to acknowledge that in his ruling.

Obamacare et les critiques: de moins en moins d'arguments?

Ils étaient nombreux les républicains et les chroniqueurs conservateurs à critiquer sévèrement l'Affordable care act cher au Président Obama. Si le Président s'abstiendra de trop célébrer la mise en place d'une réforme incomplète, il peut tout de même se réjouir du nombre intéressant d'inscriptions au programme jusqu'à maintenant. Les débuts catastrophiques du site internet ont été largement utilisés par les critiques pour décrier l'ensemble du programme. La réussite des derniers mois prive les opposants de ce qui était, jusqu'à maintenant, leur principal argument.

 "On Tuesday, Obamacare sign-ups passed 7 million, six months after the launch of a federal website that could barely sign up anybody. There are still a lot of questions about how solid that figure is, but the idea that the law could even come close to the original goal after such a disastrous start would have been laughable even a few weeks ago.

It was also a wake-up call for Republicans and conservatives, and even the occasional liberal, who pushed the argument that the failed website challenges the idea at the heart of Obama’s agenda — that government can still solve big social problems.

That’s left the critics questioning the early numbers or changing the subject. It’s a reminder that the attacks on the website were more than complaints about technology, but a proxy for a much deeper argument about what government should do and what it can’t do.

 "“The CIA described [its program] repeatedly both to the Department of Justice and eventually to Congress as getting unique, otherwise unobtainable intelligence that helped disrupt terrorist plots and save thousands of lives,” said one U.S. official briefed on the report. “Was that actually true? The answer is no.”

 Current and former U.S. officials who described the report spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue and because the document remains classified. The 6,300-page report includes what officials described as damning new disclosures about a sprawling network of secret detention facilities, or “black sites,” that was dismantled by President Obama in 2009.

Obama et l'Affordable care act: ‘Armageddon has not arrived'

 Après des débuts particulièrement pénibles, les inscriptions sur le site de l'Affordable care act ont augmenté au fil des mois, particulièrement dans le sprint des derniers jours. On en est maintenant à un peu plus de sept millions d'inscriptions, un chiffre qui se rapproche des prévisions du CBO (Congress budget office). Les chiffres ne disent toutefois pas si le nombre de jeunes américains est suffisant pour assurer la réussite financière du projet...

 "“No, the Affordable Care Act hasn’t fixed our long broken health care system, but this law has made our broken system a lot better,” Obama said before a large and happy crowd Tuesday afternoon in the Rose Garden.

“In these first six months we’ve taken a big step forward,” he said. “Under this law, the share of Americans with insurance is up, and the growth of health care costs is down.”

 And the critics, he stressed, have been proven wrong: “There are still no death panels. Armageddon has not arrived. Instead, this law is helping millions of Americans.”
