Richard Nixon et Jay Gatsby: même combat?

Le Président Nixon mourait il y a vingt ans cette semaine. Pour l'occasion John Aloysius Farrell raconte une anecdote sur une retraite du président Nixon à Camp David au plus fort de la tourment du Watergate. Lors de cette escapade, Nixon a demandé qu'on lui présente deux films, "Becket" et "The great Gatsby". Pour l'auteur qui publiera bientôt un nouvel ouvrage sur Nixon, l'histoire de Gatsby est celle de Nixon.

 "If in “Becket” Nixon found a clue to his destruction, in “Gatsby” he was engulfed by grand biographical theme. Sitting there, in the dark at Camp David, did he not see? Could he not help but recognize? “The Great Gatsby” is the story of his life.

 Having spent much of the last few years poking through Nixon’s papers, writings and psyche, I find the comparison convincing. They were each, Gatsby and Nixon, strivers from the west, sons of pedestrian parentage, fugitives from the tedium of the frontier farm and small-town monotony. They spun their daydreams beneath wide skies, and lay awake in bed at night, plotting the unfolding of their incumbent greatness. On the fly leaf of a book, Gatsby drafted a self-help plan: “Rise from bed….Exercise….Read one improving book or magazine per week.” Now hear from President Richard Nixon, scrawling notes to himself on his ever-present yellow pads: “Add element of lift to each appearance….Pithy, memorable phrases….Stop recreation except purely for exercise….Need for more reading.”

Caricature Cour suprême et discrimination positive

Thomas est seulement le deuxième homme de couleur à siéger à la Cour suprême. Il a été nommé par le Président Bush en 1991. Il est considéré comme très conservateur. Thomas croit que le Voting Right Act de 1965, législation qui protégeait le droit des Noirs de voter, est inconstitutionnel. Pas étonnant que Dave Granlund réfère à lui dans cette caricature qui a pour thème la décision de la Cour suprême en faveur du Michigan qui freine la discrimination positive.

Un ticket féminin pour 2016?

Hillary Clinton n'a pas encore annoncé sa candidature pour 2016, mais déjà on évalue la possibilité que les démocrate présente deux femmes à l'élection de 2016. Élire la première femme à la présidence serait déjà un événement historique, mais nos voisins sont-ils prêts à élire la première Présidente et la première Vice-Présidente dans la même élection?

 In 1992, when two Senate seats became open in California, the political conventional wisdom concluded that the two Democrats running — Ms. Feinstein and Barbara Boxer — would not possibly win in the same cycle. They are both serving today and lead powerful Senate committees.

New Hampshire now has two female senators — Jeanne Shaheen, a Democrat, and Kelly Ayotte, a Republican — and its entire top elected slate in the state is made up of women.

And it is now common to see women at the upper reaches of power in Washington. “It was once hard to imagine a female secretary of state,” Ms. Mandel said. “Then we had three in a row.”

Further, there is a body of academic evidence — somewhat supported by recent events in Congress — that demonstrates that women can make a case for effective leadership as a group.

The authors of a study published in the American Journal of Political Science, “When Are Women More Effective Lawmakers Than Men?” found that “while men may choose to obstruct and delay, women continue to strive to build coalitions and bring about new policies.”

Marathon de Boston 2014: un gagnant américain un an après l'attentat

Un scénario rêvé pour ce premier marathon après les incidents dramatiques de 2013. Il s'agit du premier américain à l'emporter en trente ans! Beau clin d'oeil également, Meb Keflezigh est un immigrant originaire d'Érythrée. Il est arrivé aux États-Unis lors que son pays d'origine était déchiré par la guerre. Comme le frères Tsarnaev étaient également des immigrés, le vainqueur offre un petit vent de fraîcheur sur cette édition.

 "“I wanted to win it for Boston ... win it for the people,” he said after the finish. “The last three to four miles, (the crowd) pushed me through it. I’m so lucky to be the champion. “It’s not about me,” he continued. “It’s Boston Strong. Meb Strong.” The 38-year-old elite runner said he had vowed to win the race after the Red Sox won the World Series last fall and the trophy was brought to the Boylston Street finish line by outfielder Jonny Gomes. “God bless America,” he said at the finish line. He also wrote the names of last year’s victims on the corners of his race bib."
