Les républicains étaient heureux d'obtenir le contrôle des deux chambres lors des élections de mi-mandat. Ils affirmaient être maintenant en mesure d'influencer positivement la gestion du pays. C'était sans compter les divisions provoquer par les élus près de la faction Tea party. Le speaker de la Chambre John Boehner est parvenu à les contourner hier encore, mais il faut prévoir d'autres manifestations des divisions au sein du parti.

Les démocrates peuvent-ils reprendre le Sénat en 2016? C'est bien possible.

L'élection présidentielle aura lieu en 2016, mais ce sera également l'occasion pour les 435 représentants de remettre leur siège en jeu tout comme ce sera le cas de 34 sénateurs (on renouvelle environ le tiers du Sénat à chaque période de deux ans). Les démocrates devraient normalement être avantagés puisque ce sont les républicains qui détiennent un plus grand nombre de sièges dont plusieurs ne possédant qu'une faible majorité. De leur côté les démocrates sont assurés de maintenir 8 des 10 sièges qu'ils détiennent.

Just two Democratic seats—Harry Reid’s in Nevada and Michael Bennet’s in Colorado—are not solid, both in states where the GOP surged in 2014. In the Silver State, Republican Brian Sandoval would start as the frontrunner if he decided to challenge Reid, though the recently-reelected governor appears unlikely to run. It’s also not impossible that Reid, who says he will seek re-election, ultimately decides to retire. There are several potential Bennet opponents, such as Republican U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman, but no one that immediately suggests the incumbent is doomed. Moreover, both Reid and Bennet have an ace to play: Presidential level turnout will draw out a much larger group of Democratic voters, especially Hispanics and the young, than we saw in 2014."

Les courriels d'Hillary Clinton: une mine d'or pour les républicains?

On apprenait hier que pendant son passage au Secrétariat d'État Hillary Clinton n'aurait pas utilisé une adresse courriel sécurisée du gouvernement américain, mais plutôt son adresse courriel personnelle. Pour plusieurs observateurs il est pertinent de vérifier si Mme Clinton a bien déposé des copies des courriels reliés à sa fonction sur les serveurs du gouvernement américain. On peut aussi se demander si son adresse personnelle était suffisamment sécurisée. Même si la plupart des Secrétaires d'État ont utilisé leur adresse personnelle (souvent en alternance avec l'adresse officielle, contrairement à Mme Clinton), les républicains ont tout de suite utilisé la nouvelle dans de nouvelles attaques publicitaires. Peut-on faire confiance à Mme Clinton? Cette dernière a intérêt à réagir rapidement.

"Within hours of a report that Clinton had relied heavily on her personal email address while serving as secretary of state, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, a Republican eyeing 2016, tweeted to demand that she release all her emails. By Tuesday morning, the GOP opposition group America Rising filed a Freedom of Information Act request to the State Department, requesting copies of emails sent to Clinton.

The quick reaction was a product of the machine that Republicans have built to attack 2016’s presumptive Democratic frontrunner, but it also suggested that this is an issue with staying power, one that Republicans can be expected to tie to other potential scandals and refer to over many months even if Clinton releases all her correspondence.

In a sense, the situation bears some resemblance to the case of Romney and his tax returns. Repeated demands from Democrats — and some Republicans — that the former private equity executive disclose his returns hindered the GOP nominee’s campaign in 2012. It took him until September 2012 to release his 2011 documents, by which point Democrats had successfully painted him as an out-of-touch plutocrat."

Netanyahou au Congrès: les démocrates insultés

Les démocrates du Congrès n'ont pas tardé à faire connaître leurs réactions au discours de Benjamin Netanyahou. Si le Président Obama s'est contenté d'affirmer que ce discours ne présentait "rien de neuf", les élus du Congrès ont été plus virulents dans leurs critiques.

"Netanyahu had said the concessions he was criticizing weren’t secret and could be found on Google. “I don’t usually trust things that I find on Google. So I want to actually see the deal,” said Sen. Gary Peters, a Michigan Democrat. Many of Peters’s Democratic colleagues were less restrained, led by House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who was visibly agitated during the speech. She said afterward that she was near tears, “saddened by the insult to the intelligence of the United States” and the “condescension toward our knowledge of the threat posed by Iran.”
