Obama en Alaska: des relents de guerre froide.

Le Président américain a mentionné le réchauffement climatique, mais son séjour en Alaska peut également être interprété comme une réaction aux prétentions de la Russie dans cette portion du globe. Une question qui intéresse également le Canada.

""Leaving Russia alone to shepherd shipping in the Arctic gives them even more dangerous leverage over global energy supplies," warned Mead Treadwell, a former lieutenant governor of Alaska and energy official in the George W. Bush and Obama administrations, in a recent article for the Harvard International Review.

During a stop on Tuesday in Seward, Obama will propose to speed up acquisition of a replacement for the Coast Guard's heavy icebreaker - which is also deployed to Antarctica - by two years, to 2020, as well as begin planning construction of new icebreakers. Crucially, he'll call on Congress to fund this effort. There's general agreement that new icebreakers are needed, but not on how to pay for it."

Carly Fiorina participera au débat du 16 septembre

La seule femme dans la course chez les républicains n'avait pas été invitée à la "table des grands" pour le premier débat télévisé. Sa performance en "sous-carte" a été convaincante et CNN a modifié les règles de participation, deux facteurs qui permettent à Mme Fiorina de se retrouver avec les candidats en tête de peloton.

"She first got the attention of many GOP activists with her sharp, memorable attack lines against the Democratic frontrunner, former secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton. Among them: "Like Hillary Clinton, I too have traveled hundreds of thousands of miles around the globe. But unlike her, I've actually accomplished something. You see, Mrs. Clinton, flying is not an accomplishment; it is an activity."

In Cleveland, she may have gotten off the best jab at Trump, even though she wasn't on the stage with him. Referring to a Washington Post report that former president Bill Clinton had called Trump while the New York real estate mogul was considering whether to run, Fiorina said: "I didn't get a phone call from Bill Clinton before I jumped in the race. Did any of you get a phone call from Bill Clinton? I didn't. Maybe it's because I hadn't given money to the foundation or donated to his wife's Senate campaign."

Jeb Bush s'attaque (enfin) à Donald Trump

Celui qu'on a longtemps présenté comme le favori pour les primaires républicaines tente le pari risqué de la joute verbale avec son adversaire Donald Trump. Un pari risqué mais presqu'inévitable.

"Bush’s release of the Web video — amplified by his sharp attacks in English and Spanish after a town hall meeting here — marked a departure from weeks of reluctant, mostly tepid criticism of Trump, who has routinely assailed Bush for not having the “energy” to be president, among other taunts. The escalation came after Trump released an aggressive video Monday that flashed mug shots of men charged with or convicted of murder as Bush’s comments that undocumented immigrants enter the United States as “an act of love” played in the background.

The video Bush released Tuesday strings together clips from past interviews of Trump praising Democratic front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton and voicing support for abortion rights, tax increases for wealthy Americans and the 2009 economic stimulus program.

In the remarks he delivered in Spanish in Miami, Bush’s tone and word choices were sharper than what he has said on the topic in English."

Caricature Obama et le Mont McKinley: changement de nom

Le Président Obama a décidé de redonner au Mont McKinley son ancienne dénomination. Le plus haut sommet en Amérique du Nord retrouve donc le nom de Denali. Le Président républicain William McKinley a été au pouvoir entre 1897 et 1901. Assassiné au début de son second mandat, ce politicien considéré comme progressiste sera remplacé par Theodoore Roosevelt. Il y a déjà quarante ans qu'on se querelle sur le nom du sommet et l'Alaska a finalement obtenu gain de cause.
