Au sein des pays qui accueillent le plus d'immigrants, la population perçoit généralement les nouveaux arrivants comme une force plutôt qu'un fardeau.

 "In 10 of the countries surveyed, majorities view immigrants as a strength rather than a burden. Among them are some of the largest migrant receiving countries in the world: the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Canada and Australia (each hosting more than 7 million immigrants in 2017).

 By contrast, majorities in five countries surveyed – Hungary, Greece, South Africa, Russia and Israel – see immigrants as a burden to their countries. With the exception of Russia, these countries each have fewer than 5 million immigrants."

Juifs et Musulmans démocrates tentent un rapprochement

Il faut prendre au sérieux ces divisions au sein du Parti démocrate qui vont bien au-delà du seul clivage entre les éléments les plus progressistes et les plus centristes. La formation politique compte désormais trois élus de confession musulmane dont deux recrues qui expriment des idées que les dirigeants gèrent habituellement dans la plus grande discrétion. Comme on souhaite présenter un front uni pour la campagne 2020, on avait prévu une rencontre pour tenter de bâtir des ponts entre des élus de confessions religieuses différentes. Le résultat n'est pas celui attendu pour l'instant.

Donald Trump: une âme perdue et un esprit déséquilibré

Je me permets de relayer ce texte de Peter Wehner dans "The Atlantic" parce que je crois que l'auteur a raison. Nous nous sommes un peu habitués à ses frasques et ses nombreux écarts après deux ans à la présidence, mais la situation n'est pas normale pour autant. L'homme n'est pas sain. Faut-il continuer à s'intéresser à ses lubies et à les dénoncer? Oui!! Il ne faut jamais qu'une telle attitude de la part d'un leader devienne la norme.

 "I’m sympathetic to those who worry that too many Americans spend too much time paying too much attention to what Trump tweets. The danger is that we allow Trump to succeed in keeping us in a state of constant agitation and moral consternation, in ways that are unhealthy and even play to Trump’s advantage, allowing him to control the nation’s conversation.

But that view, which might apply in some circumstances, shouldn’t apply in all circumstances. The real danger in so desensitizing ourselves to Trump’s tweets is that we normalize deviant behavior and begin to accept what is unacceptable.

  A culture lives or dies based on its allegiance to unwritten rules of conduct and unstated norms, on the signals sent about what kind of conduct constitutes good character and honor and what kind of conduct constitutes dishonor and corruption. Like each of us, our leaders are all too human, flawed and imperfect. But that reality can’t make us indifferent or cynical when it comes to holding those in authority to reasonable moral standards. After all, cultures are shaped by the words and deeds that leaders, including political leaders, validate or invalidate."
