Les deux filles et les deux fils du journaliste assassiné se sont bien peu exprimés publiquement après la mort horrible de leur père. Les compensations versées par le régime saoudien expliquerait ce silence. Après avoir offert des allocations mensuelles et des résidences en Arabie saoudite, les dirigeants s'apprêteraient à verser des millions supplémentaires pour compenser la famille et s'assurer de leur discrétion. Quelqu'un se sent coupable?

Washington Post publisher Fred Ryan said in an op-ed Monday, six months after Jamal Khashoggi’s death, that the Saudis “have adopted a strategy of evasion” that has “scapegoated expendable officials, seeking to quell international furor by staging a sham trial.”

Khashoggi’s second son, Abdullah, declined to comment when reached Monday. William Taylor, a Washington lawyer who has represented the family, also refused to discuss any compensation the family has received."

Nous savions déjà que Trump avait contourné ses services de renseignements pour obtenir des habilitations de sécurité pour sa fille et son gendre. Selon Tricia Newbold qui témoignait devant un comité de la chambre des représentants, vingt-cinq autres individus auraient finalement obtenu des habilitations qui avaient été au préalable refusées.

 "Ms. Newbold told the committee’s staff members that the clearance applications had been denied for a variety of reasons, including “foreign influence, conflicts of interest, concerning personal conduct, financial problems, drug use, and criminal conduct,” the memo said. The denials by the career employees were overturned, she said, by more-senior officials who did not follow the procedures designed to mitigate security risks."

Déclin des États-Unis? Les Américains sont pessimistes (Pew research Center)

Nos voisins américains sont pessimistes et inquiets quand on les interroge sur l'avenir de leur pays. Ils s'inquiètent de l'écart croissant entre les riches et les pauvres, de la polarisation politique et de l'importance des États-Unis sur la scène internationale.

 "A new Pew Research Center survey focused on what Americans think the United States will be like in 2050 finds that majorities of Americans foresee a country with a burgeoning national debt, a wider gap between the rich and the poor and a workforce threatened by automation.

Majorities predict that the economy will be weaker, health care will be less affordable, the condition of the environment will be worse and older Americans will have a harder time making ends meet than they do now. Also predicted: a terrorist attack as bad as or worse than 9/11 sometime over the next 30 years.

 These grim predictions mirror, in part, the public’s sour mood about the current state of the country. The share of Americans who are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the country – seven-in-ten in January of 2019 – is higher now than at any time in the past year."

"Uncle Joe" ou "Creepy Joe": les manies de Biden peuvent-elles couler sa candidature?

Depuis des années on remarque que Joe Biden manifeste son soutien et son affection de manière très physique. Il suffit d'entrer les termes "creepy Joe" dans un moteur de recherche pour voir aussitôt un nombre considérable de photos et de montages qui nous montrent Joe Biden poser des gestes pour lesquels en 2019 il nous faut bien des éléments de contexte de manière justifier une telle attitude. La photographie la plus célèbre à ce chapitre est celle où il semble poser sa tête dans la chevelure de Stephanie Carter pendant que son époux s'exprime à la suite de sa nomination comme secrétaire de Barack Obama. Mme Carter elle-même prenait la défense de Biden hier, mais le style de Biden peut être nuisible à plusieurs égards. Dans un premier temps les manies de Biden vont à l'encontre de ses propres positions au sujet du #MeToo. Ses manifestations d'affection placent des femmes dans l'embarras et ses gestes ne sont pas sollicités. De plus, les comportements reprochés à l'ancien vice-président rappelle aux électeurs des comportements d'une autre époque. Biden est suffisamment populaire pour se remettre des révélations récentes de Lucy Flores, mais pour un parti qui vise un électorat féminin, progressiste et diversifié, l'épisode fait réfléchir.

"Mayor Pete" peut-il hausser son jeu d'un cran?

J'ai déjà souligné à maintes reprises que Pete Buttigieg est une des figues politiques les plus intéressantes du présent cycle électoral. Il est inconnu au plan national lorsqu'il annonce sa candidature pour la présidentielle 2002, il est maintenant considéré comme un phénomène sur Twitter et il a déjà effectué une tournée d'émissions télévisées qui confirmant son nouveau statut. Par contre, se démarquer sur Twitter ne remplace pas une équipe efficace et à l'oeuvre sur l'ensemble du territoire. Buttigieg doit maintenant capitaliser sur sa récente notoriété pour être plus présent sur le terrain et cumuler un trésor de guerre qui lui permettra de rivaliser avec les Harris, Booker, Sanders qui ont déjà plusieurs longueurs d'avance.
