 Fred Phelps était pour le moins controversé. À la tête d'un tout petit groupe de fidèles dont la plusieurs sont ses propres enfants, Phels s'est ouvertement attaqué à l'homosexualité, allant même jusqu'à créer un site intitulé "God hates fags". Les principaux problèmes de la société étaient à ses yeux attribuables à l'homosexualité, incluant le décès de militaires américains à l'étranger. La Cour suprême avait confirmé son droit d'exprimer ses vues tout en reconnaissant qu'elles peuvent blesser les gens.

Rand Paul: les Américains sont-ils prêts pour sa candidature?

Je crois pas que la candidature du républicain (libertarien) Rand Paul à la présidentielle 2016 soit une bonne chose pour les républicains. très populaire dans certaines régions des États-Unis, Paul passerait difficilement la rampe dans une élection nationale. Il faut cependant admettre que Paul en mène large présentement et que sa candidature potentielle ne laisse personne indifférent. Voici un article intéressant de POLITICO sur le "phénomène" Rand Paul.

 "The problem for libertarian politicians is that Americans hate libertarianism. They like Social Security and minimum-wage hikes, they are still somewhat wary of free tradeand they resent that the world is full of conniving and frequently swarthy foreigners who are scheming to provide us with goods and services in exchange for little green pieces of paper. Four times as many Americans support pulling out of NAFTA or renegotiating it as support staying in. Paul, on the other hand, wants to make the whole world a free-trade zone: He scores 100 percent on the libertarian Cato Institute’s free-trade index. Libertarian ideas might appeal to voters on principle—in a poll last fall, 22 percent of Americans said they identify as or “lean” libertarian. But in the voting booth Americans don’t have principles; they have interests."

 Depuis l'an dernier on a réduit la portée du Voting rights act voté sous l'administration de Lyndon Johnson. Les mesures présentées à l'époque visaient à protéger les droits des Noirs, mais également ceux des autres minorités. Bill Day, en utilisant le nom Jim Crow, réfère aux lois du sud ségrégationniste entre la fin de la guerre de Sécession et 1964. Le nom de Jim Crow est tiré d'une chanson écrite en 1928 qui dépeint de manière caricaturale les Noirs du sud.

Chris Christie en bande dessinée

Il semble que les péripéties du Gouverneur du New Jersey, et probable candidat à l'élection de 2016, Chris Christie aient inspiré un créateur de bandes dessinées.

 "Frizell said when he wrote the first draft of the book, he decided that Christie’s handling of Hurricane Sandy and the destruction of the boardwalk at Seaside Heights, a place Frizell knew from childhood, would be the focal point of the book.

 ”I found it remarkable that in this political climate, Christie, a Republican, reached across the aisle to work with President Obama, a Democrat. Despite whatever came after, I felt that this was a positive thing to highlight. I decided to write something a bit different when writing this book. I wanted the spirit of New Jersey to have both a dark and light side.”

 For his part, Frizell decided to handle the Fort Lee bridge scandal delicately. “The epilogue of the book, which deals with the now infamous bridge scandal, is the closest I come to political commentary. I’d rather let Gov. Christie’s words and deeds speak for themselves. Since this is an ongoing issue likely to come up during the election cycle, I leave the story with a bit of a cliffhanger. Perhaps I’ll have the chance to revisit the story of Chris Christie should he be reelected or move up.”
