"Étudiant au baccalauréat international, Léo Thibault s'attendait à assister à l'investiture de la première femme présidente des États-Unis au moment où le voyage a été organisé, cet automne, au terme de longues démarches pour obtenir les autorisations.

Il admet toutefois que peu importe l'élu, assister à une telle cérémonie est une expérience marquante. « De voir la foule là-bas, la grandeur de l'événement il y a un petit stress qui est relié à ça. Mais j'y vais avec enthousiasme », dit-il."

Obama à 60% pour le taux d'approbation

Le taux d'approbation de Barack Obama atteint maintenant 60% et il n'est devancé à ce chapitre que par Reagan et Clinton. Quand on observe l'ensemble des données de ce sondage, on observe cependant qu'elles sont grandement affectées par le clivage politique. On mentionne souvent la polarisation polarisation politique aux États-Unis ce sondage en est un nouvel exemple.

"Amid those glowing reviews, one-quarter of Americans (25%) say Obama is one of the nation's greatest presidents, far outpacing the share who felt that way about other recent presidents as their terms ended (11% described Reagan that way, 10% Clinton, and 5% or fewer said so about either President Bush). Still, nearly as many (23%) call Obama a poor president, more than said so about Reagan, Clinton or the first president Bush, but well below the 46% who said George W. Bush was a poor president as he prepared to leave the White House.

That assessment of Obama's presidency, as well as his approval ratings, are marked by sharp partisan divides. While 54% of Democrats consider Obama one of the greatest presidents, 54% of Republicans call him a poor president. Though he has earned near universal approval among Democrats (95% approve), just 18% of Republicans say they approve of how he handled the presidency. That gap explains the difference between Obama's approval rating and those of the two former presidents who left office with higher marks."

Obama commue la peine de Chelsea Manning

Le Président Obama a profité des derniers jours pour grâcier ou commuer les peines de 247 détenus. Malgré le nombre considérable, c'est le cas de Chelsea Manning qui a surtout intéressé les médias. Condamnée à 35 ans de prison, Manning avait dirrigé vers WikiLeaks des documents confidentiels. Selon la Maison Blanche son cas serait très différent de celui d'Edward Snowden. Snowden n'a jamais accepté de rentrer au pays et de subir son procès. De plus, il s'est réfugié en Russie, un pays que les services de renseignements américains accusent maintenant d'avoir interféré dans la dernière élection présidentielle.

"But officials said the president thought that in Manning’s case, seven years behind bars was enough punishment and that she had been given an excessive sentence — the longest ever imposed in the United States for a leak conviction. The administration has contrasted her case with that of Edward Snowden, the National Security Agency contractor who leaked classified documents in 2013 and then fled the country, pointing out that Manning did not try to avoid facing the U.S. justice system for her crimes.

“Chelsea Manning is somebody who accepted responsibility for the crimes she committed,” a senior White House official said, speaking on the condition of anonymity under ground rules set by the White House. “She expressed remorse for committing those crimes. She began serving the sentence that was handed down. The president’s concern was rooted in the fact that the sentence handed down is longer than sentences given to other individuals who committed comparable crimes.”
