Bruce Jenner et le "phénomène populaire transgenre"

J'étais bien jeune en 1976, mais je me souviens très bien de la victoire de Bruce Jenner. Pendant plusieurs années Jenner a très bien exploité sa victoire pour devenir une véritable célébrité. Depuis un certain temps Jenner attire l'attention en raison de modifications importantes de son physique. Il approcherait de la fin d'un processus qui lui permettrait de devenir une femme. Ce matin le très sérieux New York Times s'intéresse à cette histoire parce que Jenner n'est pas le seul transgenre à retenir l'attention. Bien sûr Jenner contribue à cette couverture puisqu'il est associé au "célèbre" clan Kardashian, mais d'autres personnages publics s'exposent maintenant sans complexes. Quels seront les retombées de cette couverture importante? Est-ce sain parce que la médiatisation favorise l'acceptation et permet à des gens de sortir de l'anonymat? Contribue-t-on ainsi à une meilleure compréhension du phénomène ou accorde-t-on une fois de plus trop d'attention à la "dictature" de l'image? Assurément on mélange ici des démarches sincères à des impératifs de marketing et de rentabilité.

When he reportedly sat the family down to announce his intentions to make the gender transition, Mr. Jenner, his next reality-television project in mind, made sure that the cameras were rolling.

 Marcia Ochoa, chairwoman of the feminist studies department at the University of California, Santa Cruz, said that much of the publicity swirling around Mr. Jenner, especially the obsession with his physical changes, had been ugly and prurient.

“It’s such a courageous act, if she’s going to be transitioning publicly and subjecting herself to that kind of ridicule,” Ms. Ochoa said, using the feminine pronoun to describe Mr. Jenner. “In some ways, this is changing the whole landscape of it, because ultimately it looks inhumane, and she is a person who deserves to be happy.”
