Chris Christie et la rougeole: on vaccine ou pas?

Le gouverneur républicain du New Jersey Chris Christie a plus ou moins confirmé ses intentions pour la présidentielle 2016 en effectuant un voyage en Angleterre. Qu'irait y faire un gouverneur du New Jersey sinon démontrer à ses concitoyens qu'il "connait le monde"? Pendant ce séjour Christie a effectué une déclaration au sujet de l'éclosion de plusieurs cas de rougeole aux États-Unis. Christie a affirmé qu'il avait fait vacciner ses enfants pour les protéger et protéger les autres, mais que la décision relevait d'un choix parental et non pas du choix d'un fonctionnaire ou d'un élu. Même s'il a depuis précisé son propos, la déclaration a soulevé une petite controverse et un débat. Comme gouverneur d'un état, et potentiel candidat à la présidence, Christie aurait dû insister sur sa responsabilité de protéger la santé de ses concitoyens et promouvoir les mérites de la vaccination. C'est du moins l'avis de Paul Waldman dans le Washington Post.

 "No, no, a thousand times no. It’s great that Christie vaccinated his children, but it’s also completely irrelevant. And what he thinks as a parent is absolutely not more important than what he thinks as a public official. Want to know why? Because he’s a public official. That means that he has a responsibility for the health and welfare of the nine million people who live in his state. I am so tired of politicians who say, “My most important title is Mom/Dad.” It isn’t. When you decided to run for public office, you accepted that there would be times when you’d have to act in the public interest regardless of your family’s interest, or your friends’ interest, or the interest of the town you grew up in. When you took the oath of office you made a covenant that you’d work on behalf of the larger community. The fact that you’re a parent can help you understand other parents and their concerns, but it doesn’t change your primary responsibility."

WORST PLAY CALL EVER (Seattle Times)

Le Seattle Times tranche brutalement et considère que la décision d'y aller par le jeu aérien alors que les Seahawks étaient à une verge de la zone des buts est la pire décision de toute l'histoire du Super Bowl. Si la réaction est extrême à Seattle, imaginez un peu une situation similaire impliquant les Canadiens de Montréal au hockey!!! Drame "national"!

 "You could almost see the eccentric running back nicknamed Beast Mode diving into the end zone and doing his handshake celebration. You could almost see the blue and green confetti falling at University of Phoenix Stadium. Instead, in one moment, the Seahawks forgot who they were. And Super Bowl XLIX turned into the most painful loss in franchise history.

It happened because of the worst play call in Super Bowl history, a decision that will also go down as one of the most regrettable ever in Seattle sports. With 26 seconds remaining, Russell Wilson took a shotgun snap and threw a quick slant intended for wide receiver Ricardo Lockette. New England cornerback Malcolm Butler jumped in front of the route, however, and intercepted the pass in the end zone.

Game over. History delayed. Legacy unfulfilled."

Ukraine: les États-Unis pourraient fournir des armes

Super Bowl 2015: un jeu inexplicable provoque la défaite des Seahawks

Comme presque tout le monde j'ai été étonné par le choix de jeu de l'entraîneur Pete Carroll alors que son équipe n'était qu'à une verge de la zone des buts des Patriots. Tous s'attendaient à ce qu'il confie le ballon à son porteur Marshawn Lynch. S'il est facile de remettre en question cette décision audacieuse après l'échec, je comprends la tentation de Carroll d'y aller pour une passe alors que tout le stade s'attend à une course. De plus, lorsqu'on observe le déroulement de la séquence on voit à quel point le jeu défensif qui mène à l'interception est exceptionnel. Beau joueur, l'entraîneur des Seahawks a assumé tout le poids du choix, soulageant ainsi les épaules de son jeune quart.  "Losing the Super Bowl is brutal. Losing like this … well, maybe somebody, somewhere, has a good explanation for what happened at the end of this game. But that somebody is not Pete Carroll.

Carroll blew this game. He dropped the silver platter. He got three feet from the finish line and decided to grab a cheeseburger. The Patriots led, 28-24, but Seattle was on the Patriots’ one-yard line in the final minute.

Carroll’s Seahawks had three plays to gain one yard to win the championship. He had the best power runner in the league on his team, a mediocre set of receivers and only one logical option: Give it to Marshawn Lynch.

To that point in the game, Lynch had run the ball 24 times. He had gained at least one yard 22 of those times. And even on those two runs, he was merely stopped for no gain -- it’s not like he lost yardage. He rarely loses yardage, because he is the hardest man in the league to tackle.

 Even Katy Perry, fresh off her dance with sharks and more than a normal day’s worth of sky-walking, must have been thinking “Hey, fellas, just keep it simple here.”"

Super Bowl: cinq mythes entourant les publicités

Le Super Bowl est un des événements les plus suivis sur la planète et on nous informe régulièrement des sommes astronomiques dépensées par les entreprises pour trente secondes de publicité pendant le match. Dans le Washington Post de ce matin, David Griner s'attaque à cinq mythes entourant ces fameuses publicités.

 "1. A Super Bowl ad isn’t worth the cost.

Super Bowl ads don’t come cheap. This year, the price tag is $4.5 million for a 30-second spot — and that covers just the fee paid to the network hosting the game. Millions more can be spent on celebrity appearances, music licensing, agency fees and production.

And to what end? “Most of them don’t work,” marketing professor Ira Kalb of the University of Southern California wrote in the Huffington Post. “They cost a lot and produce questionable returns to those that pay for them.” On Thursday, NPR’s Shankar Vedantam declared, “These companies are either getting ripped off or they are ripping themselves off.”

 It’s true that some studies have shown that as many as 80 percent of Super Bowl ads don’t increase purchases and that people have a hard time recalling the brand associated with a Super Bowl ad they watched. But on balance, the numbers indicate that a Super Bowl ad is worth the investment for the companies that can afford it — assuming the commercial is any good.
