Sans être républicain (je pourrais occasionnellement...), je ne suis pas loin de partager la réaction du site Indystar.com. Daniels aurait été un bon candidat, un homme capable de faire une course sérieuse et de bousculer u peu Obama. Peut-être préfère-t-il garder "ses cartouches" pour la campagne 2016?
"With Daniels out of the race, Republicans are left with a lackluster field of possible nominees. That’s a problem not just for the GOP. With the economy still sputtering and the aforementioned fiscal problems, the nation needs both President Barack Obama and his challengers to engage in a thoughtful debate about setting priorities and accepting sacrifices. It’s even more uncertain now, with Daniels out of the picture, whether that discussion will ever take place in the 2012 campaign.
Daniels’ decision to sit out the race is a disappointment on another level as well. The governor had spoken eloquently in recent months about his desire to reset the tone of the nation’s political discourse. Given the intense pressures of national politics, Daniels’ goal of injecting civility into the primaries and eventually the General Election may have proven unattainable. But it would have been a valuable exercise if he had tried.
Finally, Daniels’ dance on the national stage, however long it would have lasted, likely would have reflected positively on his home state. To have an intelligent and articulate Hoosier leading the debate about the most critical issues facing the nation would have helped to erase unfair and inaccurate stereotypes still tossed around at times on the national level.
Mitch Daniels’ decision to stay on the sidelines is a disappointing loss for his party, our state, and, more important, the nation."
