Kadhafi mort: “dark shadow of tyranny has been lifted" (Obama)

Une citation tirée des déclarations du Président Obama en début d'après-midi.

"Here’s the live blog of President Obama’s speech about the death of Muammar Qadhafi in the Rose Garden on Thursday:

President Obama walks out to the Rose Garden at 2:06 p.m.

“Today the government of Libya announced the death of Muammar Qadhafi. This marks the end of a long and painful chapter for the people of Libya, who now have the opportunity to determine their own destiny,” Obama begins.

“For four decades, the Qadhafi regime ruled the Libyan people with an iron fist,” Obama says. “Libya’s wealth was squandered.”

The potential of the Libyan people was held back for a long time, the president says.

Today we can “definitively say” that the Qadhafi regime has “come to an end,” Obama says. One year ago, the notion of a “free Libya seemed impossible,” he adds.

This is a momentous day in the history of Libya, Obama says, saying the “dark shadow of tyranny has been lifted.” (2:08 p.m.)

However, we’re under no illusions, Obama says. “There will be difficult days ahead.”

But Obama reaffirms the United States’ commitment to the Libyan people so they can have freedom and opportunity. (2:10 p.m.)

Obama thanks all Americans who have sacrificed to help the Libyan people reach their goals, and notes that the U.S. didn’t put a single person on the ground. (2:11 p.m.)

We’re winding down the war in Iraq and beginning the transition in Afghanistan, Obama says.

“Of course, above all, today belongs to the people of Libya,” he says. “This is a moment for them.”

The future will be “challenging but hopeful” for the Libyan people, Obama says. With that, Obama walks back into the White House, ignoring questions shouted by reporters. (2:12 p.m.)"
