"2) ‘Gates of Hell’ or Junior Varsity? This is one area where Obama can’t whiff again. How can he convince Americans he takes the fight against ISIL seriously when his administration has veered between making them a “manageable” problem, as Obama put it last week, to Vice President Joe Biden’s pledge to chase them to the “gates of hell” — and everything in between?

Lately, he and other administration officials have been going with the formulation of “degrade and destroy” ISIL. That may be the line that Obama uses Wednesday night — but he may have to pound away at the “destroy” theme several times to convince his audience that he means it. Otherwise, he risks leaving the impression that he thinks ISIL can be “contained,” which isn’t the message the public — and vulnerable Democrats up for re-election — will want to hear.

Democratic strategist Paul Begala said Obama can help his case by explaining why the fight against ISIL will be different from the Iraq war: it’s not going to rely on American ground troops, the main burden will fall to Sunnis in the region, and the strategy will include “a real commitment to a multi-sectarian Iraq.”
