"Vulnerable Democrats in tight races — like Missouri Sen. Claire McCaskill — might be downplaying their enthusiasm for President Obama, but a fundraising email sent Monday shows Democratic donors are still excited by the president. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee reports that a fundraising email from Obama raised $580,000, the largest single-day online fundraising haul in DCCC history. Obama’s DCCC email was targeted at the Democratic grassroots. Here’s the full text, sent to the DCCC’s list: From:

Barack Obama Subject: This matters If you’re with me, then I need you right now. We’re just days away from the mid-year fundraising deadline — this is the biggest test yet of our commitment to win in 2012. We can’t fall short on this one. Donate $3 or more right now to elect a Democratic majority in Congress. Thanks, Barack"

How Obama Lost Canada (Foreign Affairs)

"Permitting the construction of the Keystone XL pipeline should have been an easy diplomatic and economic decision for U.S. President Barack Obama. The completed project would have shipped more than 700,000 barrels a day of Albertan oil to refineries in the Gulf Coast, generated tens of thousands of jobs for U.S. workers, and met the needs of refineries in Texas that are desperately seeking oil from Canada, a more reliable supplier than Venezuela or countries in the Middle East. The project posed little risk to the landscape it traversed. But instead of acting on economic logic, the Obama administration caved to environmental activists in November 2011, postponing until 2013 the decision on whether to allow the pipeline."

"The U.S. Supreme Court struck down key parts of an Arizona law Monday that sought to deter illegal immigration, but it let stand a controversial provision that lets police check a person's immigration status while enforcing other laws. In a decision sure to ripple across the political landscape in a presidential election year, the court's 5-3 ruling upheld the authority of the federal government to set immigration policy and laws.

"The national government has significant power to regulate immigration," Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the majority opinion. "Arizona may have understandable frustrations with the problems caused by illegal immigration while that process continues, but the state may not pursue policies that undermined federal law." The Supreme Court concluded that the federal government had the power to block the law -- known as SB1070. Yet the court let stand one of the most controversial parts of the bill -- a provision that lets police check a person's immigration status while enforcing other laws if "reasonable suspicion" exists that the person is in the United States illegally."

"To most passers-by, the tens of thousands of people who jammed the sidewalks of Greenwich Village on Sunday were just the typical tank-top-clad revelers of a gay pride weekend.

"But to Aaron Levine, a 19-year-old, clipboard-toting volunteer sent there by the Obama campaign, everyone was a potential get. A group of twenty-somethings huddled in the shade under a Starbucks awning trying to stay cool: “They’re perfect,” he said. The long line outside the Duplex, a nightclub with views of the parade route: “They have nothing else to do now but sign up. It’s great.”

Mr. Levine was one of hundreds of Obama field staff members and volunteers who fanned out at a dozen gay pride celebrations across the country over the weekend with a meticulous set of marching orders from the Chicago campaign headquarters: Get names, cellphone numbers, and e-mail and home addresses. But most important, get commitments to volunteer.

At times, the parades could have been confused for Obama campaign rallies. In Chicago on Sunday, 300 of his campaign staff members and volunteers marched down Halsted Street through the heart of the gay district to chants of “Four more years! Four more years!” Along Fifth Avenue in New York, a group of about 200 Obama supporters who walked the parade route were cheered by crowds waving powder-blue “L.G.B.T. for Obama” placards, referring to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. “Obama! Obama!” the onlookers cried.

While gay men and lesbians have been one of the most reliable Democratic voting blocs, supporting Democrats over Republicans by a ratio of about three to one in recent elections, the Obama campaign is capitalizing on what its strategists say is a perfect election-year opportunity. Just over six weeks ago, Mr. Obama declared his support for the right of gay couples to marry, which strengthened his political potency among gay people. Before the marriage announcement, even many of Mr. Obama’s top gay donors had questioned his commitment to their issues.

"In nine seasons with the team, he batted .287 with 133 home runs and 564 RBI. He was a three-time All-Star and finished third in the MVP voting in 2008 when the award was won by teammate Dustin Pedroia. “It’s tough,” Pedroia said. “Youk’s a guy I’ve played with my whole career here. I know how hard he’s played, and he’s given everything he’s had in every game he’s ever put on the Red Sox uniform. He pushes me every day. I want to go out and play hard just like he does.” Said Punto, “You feel for him, the way it went down. Actually, I’m excited for him. I think he’s going to be happier, being closer to (his hometown of Cincinnati). He’s having a baby. He can clear his mind and start fresh.” Mark your calendars: The White Sox visit Fenway Park on July 16-19. Odds are, Youkilis will be at third base. “He needs to go play and get rolling,” Pedroia said. “He’s a great player. We all know what he’s done here. It’s good for both sides.” http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/baseball/red_sox/view.bg?&articleid=1061141196&format=&page=2&listingType=sox#articleFull

"Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA) will respond swiftly to any adverse Supreme Court ruling with legislation to reinstitute parts of the health care law that get struck down.

“I’m prepared for a lot of different contingencies,” Harkin, who chairs the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, said Thursday during a Senate vote.

If the Court finds the mandate unconstitutional — a big if — it will either strike the mandate alone, toss out coverage guarantees that the mandate is meant to support, or throw the whole law out. Those are, at least, the three most likely possibilities.

Harkin says he’s ready for all of them.

“We’re going to have to have some kind of community rating and keep the guaranteed issue,” he said. Those are the technical terms for provisions guaranteeing that all consumers can buy health insurance regardless of pre-existing conditions, and cost sharing to allow high-risk people to afford insurance.

“We have some possible legislative fixes that I will bring forth at that time,” Harkin said. “But we are prepared for different forms of legislation to address that.”

In the unlikely event that the Court throws the whole thing out, Harkin says he’ll try to reanimate the whole thing.

“If they throw the whole thing out, yes, I will be prepared then with what I call a Health Care Restoration Act,” he said.

This is considerably more detail than most top Democrats typically offer. “We’re waiting, we’re ready to move when the Supreme Court makes a decision,” said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid.

Fast and furious: grogne contre Obama

"For months, House Republicans have tried to pry documents from theU.S. Department of Justice about Operation Fast and Furious, the spectacularly botched government operation that put guns in the hands of Mexican drug cartel thugs.

And for months, the department has responded with some, but not all, of the papers. This week the action escalated into a full-fledged constitutional clash between the White House and Congress. President Barack Obama backed Attorney GeneralEric Holder's refusal to release the documents. Obama invoked executive privilege — a move to protect the documents under the reasoning that their release could harm the president's ability to obtain candid advice from his aides.

In response, the Republican-dominated House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform voted Wednesday to recommend that Holder be held in contempt of Congress. A full House vote may come soon. And then, absent a settlement, you can expect months of political wrangling.

The White House could spare all of us a distracting and damaging battle over executive privilege — a murky principle not defined in the Constitution — if Holder would share these documents with the American people."

"On the surface, it seems as if life has never been better for David Ortiz. At 36 years old, he is tearing the cover off the ball. Coming into Thursday's game against the Marlins, he had homered in three straight games.

But Ortiz told reporters on Thursday he's annoyed by the recent media-generated drama around the Red Sox and says that he's not having all that much fun.

He indicated it might impact his decision on whether to continue on in Boston, or to move somewhere else when he's again eligible for free agency this winter.

"I don't know, man, I'm just tired of dealing with the drama here," Ortiz said. "This is baseball, man. It seems like everything that goes on around here is like one of those Congress decisions that will affect the whole nation. It's not like that, man. This is baseball. We're supposed to have fun, to have our performance out there at the highest level. Every day is something new, some drama, some more [stuff]. I'm tired of that, man. I'm here to play baseball, man."

Ortiz made similar comments about the drama of Boston shortly after last September's epic collapse, but regained his enthusiasm about his role as a longtime member of the Red Sox shortly thereafter.

"David handles it as well as anyone I've ever seen," said Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine. "You might have caught him at a bad day today. He's really pretty good at the drama. The ninth-inning drama, I'd like to see him there.""

No spiking the ball: John Boehner aux élus républicains

"If the Supreme Court rules against President Barack Obama's health care law next week, Speaker John Boehner doesn't want House Republicans "spiking...the ball."

In a memo sent to the House Republican Conference Thursday afternoon as lawmakers headed out of town, Boehner (R-Ohio) warned against celebration, and gave his colleagues a peek at next week's messaging and strategy.

"We will not celebrate at a time when millions of our fellow Americans remain out of work, the national debt has exceeded the size of our nation's economy, health costs continue to rise, and small businesses are struggling to hire," Boehner wrote in the memo, provided to POLITICO. "ObamaCare has contributed to all of these problems. Repealing it completely is part of the solution. ..but it is only one part."

In the memo, Boehner said that House Republican Conference Chairman Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas), Reps. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.) and Tom Price (R-Ga.) would "help to lead our response efforts" following the court's decision.

He also reiterated several of the party's talking points: the law has driven health care costs up, "making it harder for small businesses to hire workers," Boehner said. And Republicans will move legislation piecemeal to replace the law if its struck down.

"One of the most pernicious misunderstandings in the West about Iranians is that they are dour religious fanatics.

About half of Iranians are under the age of 25, and Iran has done a solid job of raising their education levels. I was struck on my 1,700-mile road trip across Iran by how many of them share American values, seeking fun rather than fanaticism. They seem less interested in the mosques than in amusement parks (which are ubiquitous in Iran).

“Young people don’t really go to the mosques,” said a 23-year-old man in eastern Iran, cheerfully exaggerating. “We want more ways to have fun.” He said he drinks — alcohol is illegal but everywhere — and, until recently, used drugs. Iranian officials have suggested that perhaps 10 percent of the population uses illegal drugs, traditionally opium and heroin but increasingly methamphetamines as well.

"The weapons, including automatic rifles, rocket-propelled grenades, ammunition and some antitank weapons, are being funneled mostly across the Turkish border by way of a shadowy network of intermediaries including Syria’s Muslim Brotherhood and paid for by Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, the officials said.

The C.I.A. officers have been in southern Turkey for several weeks, in part to help keep weapons out of the hands of fighters allied with Al Qaeda or other terrorist groups, one senior American official said. The Obama administration has said it is not providing arms to the rebels, but it has also acknowledged that Syria’s neighbors would do so."

Roger Clemens au Hall of fame?

"As someone who reported on Roger Clemens on a daily basis longer than any journalist in the country -- from June of 1983 when he was drafted through 1996 when I was a beat writer for both the Quincy Patriot Ledger and the Boston Globe -- I can tell you this, Clemens was and is a Hall of Famer and he should eventually get elected to the Hall.

There will be resistance to him at first, but he’ll garner enough votes to keep his Hall of Fame chances alive. Somewhere over the 15-year eligibility window, he will earn a place, I believe.

Did Clemens take performance-enhancing drugs? He probably did. For how long? We can only go by the evidence in the Mitchell Report, which indicated that during his time in Toronto after four subpar seasons with the Red Sox, there was evidence he engaged in that activity.

He certainly wasn’t alone in taking those enhancements, and obviously, so many players got away with it with their names never sullied.

You can love or hate Clemens, but one thing was undeniable – he was a great pitcher. You can joke and smirk about his claim to being a workout warrior – but he was. Those of us who witnessed it first hand for many years understand how hard he worked at being the best.

Later in his career he crossed the line.
