"Although some potential picks, including Labor Secretary Thomas Perez and House Democratic Caucus chairman, Rep. Xavier Becerra (Calif.), were not among the three people whose vetting Democrats confirmed was underway, that does not mean they might not be considered. Retired admiral Mike Mullen, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was also seen as a dark horse candidate. He had been previously vetted by longtime Clinton ally Harold Wolfson when former New York mayor Michael R. Bloomberg considered an independent bid for president."

"California, the place where she could have crawled over the finish line, ended up being the place where Clinton finally turned things around, ending once and for all her two-front war. Her victory there came just five days after her San Diego speech eviscerating presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump as unfit to be commander-in-chief — part of a 10-day run that is viewed by Clinton allies as the most successful period of Clinton’s political career.
But that high-water mark, which finally enabled her to make a full pivot to Trump, came after one of the most trying stretches for the campaign. Since her April 26 victories, Clinton had stopped campaigning against — or even mentioning — Sanders on the trail, instead turning her focus to the GOP rival on the horizon. But she was still locked in a primary, fighting opponents on the left and the right, while her Republican foe was steadily consolidating the party behind him."

"Clinton tops the general election poll against Trump and former New Mexico Gov. Gary Johnson, the Libertarian nominee, with 49 percent support among likely voters. Trump has 37 percent support, and Johnson has 9 percent support with 4 percent undecided. Just 1 percent of respondents said they wouldn’t vote for any of the candidates."
"Within 24 hours, CrowdStrike had installed software on the DNC’s computers so that it could analyze audit data that could indicate who had gained access, when and how.
The firm identified two separate hacker groups, both working for the Russian government, that had infiltrated the network, said Dmitri Alperovitch, CrowdStrike co-founder and chief technology officer. The firm had analyzed other breaches by both groups over the last two years."
"In the same week that Clinton clinched the Democratic nomination and Trump continued his criticism of federal Judge Gonzalo Curiel, the former secretary of state leads 49 percent to 42 percent."

""In a Facebook post, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee announced that his campaign would no longer issue press credentials to The Post’s reporters because of the publication’s “incredibly inaccurate coverage and reporting” of his campaign.
“Based on the incredibly inaccurate coverage and reporting of the record setting Trump campaign, we are hereby revoking the press credentials of the phony and dishonest Washington Post,” he wrote."
"After a series of tests and eventual adoption by other branches of the U.S. military, the AR-15, now the M-16, entered the jungles and rice paddies of Vietnam as a malfunction-prone mess. The weapon, after failing in combat time and time again, eventually prompted a 1967 congressional inquiry and a Marine Corps investigation after a Marine officer criticized the weapon in a widely read letter published in The Washington Post, Chivers said.
The M-16 and its civilian counterpart bear only an external resemblance to its Vietnam-era ancestors and are considered mostly reliable, if properly maintained, by today’s standards."
“As is standard practice in Boston, we are sharing real-time information and intelligence with our federal, state, local and community partners,” he said. “Currently, we have no specific, credible threats to our area as a result of the Orlando attack. As always, the FBI Boston Division will work with our law enforcement partners to gather, share and act upon threat information as it comes to our attention. We urge the public to report any and all suspicious activity to law enforcement.”
"And from my perspective, it matters what we do, not what we say. It matters that we got Bin Laden, not what name we called him," Clinton said. "But if he is somehow suggesting I don't call this for what it is, he hasn't been listening. I have clearly said we face terrorist enemies who use Islam to justify slaughtering people. We have to stop them and we will. We have to defeat radical jihadist terrorism, and we will."
"It has always been true that the toughest issues are those that pit our values against our fears. And in this tragedy, as with so many before it, both parties are certain to seek political leverage.
Meanwhile, the country’s anxieties have been rekindled. “In one sense, all of this seems so far out of control, you just wonder if there’s any way of ever getting it under control,” said George Pettice, an insurance agent from Charlotte, N.C. “Do we now start locking ourselves up in our houses, afraid to go anywhere?”
Not since 9/11 has a moment like this brought the nation together, and that evaporated quickly. Since then, calamity seems only to drive the left and the right further apart, while faith in the nation’s institutions deteriorates further."
"Stuart Stevens, who served as Mitt Romney’s chief strategist during the 2012 campaign, called Trump’s statements and actions on Sunday “childish.”
“Every day he finds a different way to show he’s unqualified to be president,” Stevens said. “Today he’s accepting congratulations at a time when 50 people are slaughtered.”
"He doesn't get it or he gets it better than anybody understands. It's one or the other," Trump said of Obama on "Fox & Friends," speaking on the phone. "And either one is unacceptable, No. 1, and No. 2, calling on another gun ban, I mean, this man has no clue. First of all, the shooter was licensed. So he went through all the procedures, he was fully licensed to have a gun. So he would have passed the test that the president would have thrown up there. It's so ridiculous. You know, this is a, this is a mentality, this is a state. And you have thousands of shooters like this with the same mentality out there in this country, and we're bringing thousands and thousands of them back into this country, and into the country every year."
