"On the hardware side, the problems ranged from the device becoming too warm -- sometimes after just 10 minutes of use -- to needing to be charged multiple times a day. The sensors on the device were far from perfect, and there were many times when I had to re-tap, re-swipe or (and maybe this was the worst part) jerk my head up repeatedly to wake up the device when it went dormant. I probably reset the device at least half a dozen times in the course of normal use because it wouldn't respond to my frantic taps, or refused to connect to my smartphone even when there were no other network problems.

Glass works better with Google's Android phones (in my case, an HTC One M8 on loan from HTC) than with the iPhone, if only because the integration between the Google systems is much smoother. As for software, developers have been smart about designing Glass apps to minimize the amount of data bombarding users. Big names such as Facebook, Twitter and CNN provide a strong app core for Glass. The CNN app, for example, will let you see headlines for top stories, or by subject, and serves headlines, photos and short video."

"A vein on an Oklahoma inmate "exploded" in the middle of his execution Tuesday, prompting authorities to abruptly halt the process and call off another execution later in the day as they try to figure out what went wrong.

The inmate, Clayton Lockett, died 43 minutes after the first injection was administered -- according to reporter Courtney Francisco of CNN affiliate KFOR who witnessed the ordeal -- of an apparent heart attack, Oklahoma Department of Corrections Director Robert Patton said.

That first drug, midazolam, is supposed to render a person unconscious. Seven minutes later, Lockett was still conscious. About 16 minutes in, after his mouth and then his head moved, he seemingly tried to get up and tried to talk, saying "man" aloud, according to the KFOR account."

Ouf... Ébranlé l'ancien candidat à la Présidence? Ce serait mal le connaître.

“This guy is absolutely locked in, unafraid of bumps in the road, and he always jokes, ‘What are they gonna do — send me to Vietnam?’ said a senior official close to the secretary. “Now the proof is in the pugilism. Kerry has spent a lifetime in the arena, and that’s where he’ll stay.”

“The views expressed by Mr. Sterling are deeply offensive and harmful. That they came from an NBA owner only heightens the damage and my personal outrage. Sentiments of this kind are contrary to the principles of inclusion and respect that form the foundation of our diverse multi-cultural and multi-ethnic league.”

“Accordingly, effective immediately, I am banning Mr. Sterling for life, from any association with the Clippers organization or the NBA. Mr. Sterling may not attend any NBA games or practices, he may not be present at any Clippers facility, and he may not participate in any business or player personnel decisions involving the team.”

“He was the torturer in chief,” said a senior Western diplomat, who recalled meeting with a prisoner at an NDS facility in Kabul to investigate how he had been treated when Gulalai entered unannounced. The detainee became agitated and bowed his head in submission. “He was terrified, which made sense,” the diplomat said. Gulalai was “a big wheel in a machine that ground up a lot of people.”

"Major League Baseball’s racial diversity today roughly mirrors that of the U.S. population. In 2012, whites comprised about the same share of the population (63%) as they did in Major League Baseball, according to the most recent comparable data. By contrast, Hispanics were overrepresented in baseball, comprising 26.9% of players and 17% of the U.S. population. (When Jackie Robinson debuted for the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947, less than 1% of players were Latino.)

In 2012, blacks were underrepresented in baseball, making up 7.2% of players and 13% of the nation’s population. Asians made up 1.9% of players in 2012 and 5% of the U.S. population. In 1993, there were no Asians in Major League Baseball, according to the baseball research group.

It’s worth noting that the majority of Asian (80%) and Hispanic (84%) players in 2012 were born outside the 50 U.S. states and the District of Columbia (i.e. foreign born or born in a U.S. territory like Puerto Rico), according to the Society for American Baseball Research.

"So yes, war is hell — but have you considered the alternatives? When looking upon the long run of history, it becomes clear that through 10,000 years of conflict, humanity has created larger, more organized societies that have greatly reduced the risk that their members will die violently. These better organized societies also have created the conditions for higher living standards and economic growth. War has not only made us safer, but richer, too.

Thinkers have long grappled with the relationships among peace, war and strength. Thomas Hobbes wrote his case for strong government, “Leviathan,” as the English Civil War raged around him in the 1640s. German sociologist Norbert Elias’s two-volume treatise, “The Civilizing Process,” published on the eve of World War II, argued that Europe had become a more peaceful place in the five centuries leading to his own day. The difference is that now we have the evidence to prove their case."

"What the rest of the world would rather see in the American presidency—and what is in America’s best interest—is not strong leadership but enlightened leadership. Think back to the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, when President John F. Kennedy rejected advice to bomb Soviet ships bound for Cuba and to destroy the missile sites that had been constructed there. Although the United States ultimately convinced the Soviet Union to withdraw its nuclear missiles from the island, the Americans also made concessions, promising they would not attempt to remove the Castro regime by force and pledging to withdraw American missiles from Turkey. As part of the settlement, it was agreed that this latter concession would not be publicized. It would, moreover, occur after an interval just long enough to suggest that it was not a concession to Soviet demands. So while the myth was that only Khrushchev had blinked, in reality Kennedy had been sensible enough to blink too, rather than risk catastrophic nuclear war. This was enlightened leadership; Kennedy won the public relations battle, but the agreement the Americans and the Soviets hammered out was a genuine compromise."

"l Gore is richer and skinnier than ever, 14 years out of the White House, a tech titan with elder statesman clout, whose disdain for politics in the capital where he lived most of his life has only grown with each year he’s lived away from it. Sure, this new Gore has a great life, what with a net worth well over the $200 million mark following the sale of his Current TV network to Al Jazeera last year, that seat on the Apple board and his starring roles with two investment companies that tout their environmentally friendly business styles: London-based Generation Investment Management and Silicon Valley’s Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. He lives well too, between his 20-room, $4 million home in Nashville’s tony Belle Meade neighborhood and a separate apartment in San Francisco’s St. Regis luxury hotel residences.

But even in his fabulously wealthy, I’m-not-a-Washingtonian-anymore phase, Gore is still a policy wonk, of course. He may be a trendy, 50-pound-lighter vegan these days, and wear the all-black uniform of the Silicon Valley gurus who have become his peers. But the former vice president still geeks out when talking about the “cost-down curve for photovoltaic electricity,” his solar-powered houseboat and the infuriating refusal of the news media and the Republican Party to acknowledge the climate change gorilla in the room.

What Abe said: “We will choose the path in the best interest of the country, but we also hope to conclude the talks in a favorable way.”

What he meant: I’m not bluffing, either. There’s not a chance I’ll give the United States everything it wants.

Translation: Home-grown rice plays a special role in Japanese culture. A few other farm products, like beef, pork, milk and wheat, also enjoy “sacred” status there. Abe could never get the country to embrace a trade deal that undermined that heritage.

Two key points here:

First, Abe is already forcing Japan’s huge population of very small farmers to consolidate and modernize by revamping the country’s agricultural subsidy programs. It was a politically painful move, but one he could sell as necessary to keeping food prices down. Those reforms kept Japan’s agricultural sector in business — but farms there still often can’t beat U.S. prices without protective tariffs.

Second, Japan’s legislature is somewhat similar to the U.S. Senate. Lawmakers are chosen to represent districts that aren’t necessarily similar in population. So, rural members often wield outsize influence — and they’re ready to fight Abe over TPP.

"If in “Becket” Nixon found a clue to his destruction, in “Gatsby” he was engulfed by grand biographical theme. Sitting there, in the dark at Camp David, did he not see? Could he not help but recognize? “The Great Gatsby” is the story of his life.

Having spent much of the last few years poking through Nixon’s papers, writings and psyche, I find the comparison convincing. They were each, Gatsby and Nixon, strivers from the west, sons of pedestrian parentage, fugitives from the tedium of the frontier farm and small-town monotony. They spun their daydreams beneath wide skies, and lay awake in bed at night, plotting the unfolding of their incumbent greatness. On the fly leaf of a book, Gatsby drafted a self-help plan: “Rise from bed….Exercise….Read one improving book or magazine per week.” Now hear from President Richard Nixon, scrawling notes to himself on his ever-present yellow pads: “Add element of lift to each appearance….Pithy, memorable phrases….Stop recreation except purely for exercise….Need for more reading.”

"While there is no precedent for two women running together for the highest office in the United States, women have made gains in groups.

In 1992, when two Senate seats became open in California, the political conventional wisdom concluded that the two Democrats running — Ms. Feinstein and Barbara Boxer — would not possibly win in the same cycle. They are both serving today and lead powerful Senate committees.

New Hampshire now has two female senators — Jeanne Shaheen, a Democrat, and Kelly Ayotte, a Republican — and its entire top elected slate in the state is made up of women.

And it is now common to see women at the upper reaches of power in Washington. “It was once hard to imagine a female secretary of state,” Ms. Mandel said. “Then we had three in a row.”

Further, there is a body of academic evidence — somewhat supported by recent events in Congress — that demonstrates that women can make a case for effective leadership as a group.

The authors of a study published in the American Journal of Political Science, “When Are Women More Effective Lawmakers Than Men?” found that “while men may choose to obstruct and delay, women continue to strive to build coalitions and bring about new policies.”

"“I wanted to win it for Boston ... win it for the people,” he said after the finish. “The last three to four miles, (the crowd) pushed me through it. I’m so lucky to be the champion. “It’s not about me,” he continued. “It’s Boston Strong. Meb Strong.” The 38-year-old elite runner said he had vowed to win the race after the Red Sox won the World Series last fall and the trophy was brought to the Boylston Street finish line by outfielder Jonny Gomes. “God bless America,” he said at the finish line. He also wrote the names of last year’s victims on the corners of his race bib."
