Bientôt l'abandon des charges?
"Former International Monetary Fund head Dominique Strauss-Kahn walked out of a New York courthouse with a big smile on his face Friday morning after being released without bail from house arrest as doubts emerged about the hotel maid who leveled sexual assault charges against him.
“It is a great relief,” Strauss-Kahn’s attorney, William Taylor, said outside the courthouse.
The case shows “how easy it is for people to be charged with serious crimes and for there to be a rush to judgment,” he said. “It is so important in this country that people, especially the media, refrain from judgment until the facts are all in.”
State Supreme Court Judge Michael J. Obus authorized Strauss-Kahn’s release at a brief hearing Friday morning in which Prosecutor Joan Illuzzi-Orbon said the accuser has “substantial credibility issues.”
In light of the doubts about the woman’s credibility, her lawyer, Kenneth Thompson, said Friday after the hearing that the woman will come forward publicly for the first time to speak out against Strauss-Kahn and tell what happened to her.
“She is not going to remain in hiding anymore,” he said, though he didn’t say when she will go public.
The case against Strauss-Kahn, 62, came into serious doubt as reports emerged Thursday suggesting that prosecutors believe the woman who accused him of sexual assault, a hotel housekeeper, has lied during the course of investigations since the allegations emerged in mid-May.
He had been under house arrest with a $1 million bail since the end of May.
Forensic tests found clear evidence of a sexual encounter between Strauss-Kahn and the woman, and Illuzzi-Orbon said that hasn’t changed. “The fact of a sexual encounter was and is corroborated by forensic evidence,” she said.
Prosecutors have come to doubt much of what she has told them about her life and her whereabouts in the hours around the alleged crime. Nonetheless, they still have reason to think that a crime was committed. The brief amont of time that the two spent in the hotel “strongly suggests something other than a consensual act,” Illuzzi-Orbon said."
