"Tebow is a crossover phenomenon who will diversify the Jets’ offense, but his presence could undermine the incumbent, Mark Sanchez, who recently agreed to a lucrative new contract. Tebow is also a somewhat incongruous fit: an outspoken Christian playing in a city known for its extensive night life and a member of a franchise made famous by the bachelor stylings of Joe Namath and currently known for the profane speeches of its coach, Rex Ryan. “I think New York is unique; if there’s anyone that can handle it, it’s Tim,” said Urban Meyer, who coached Tebow at Florida. “He’s going to handle it the same way he’s handled everything since I first met him: up front and first class and humble about everything.
It’s probably a whole different animal in New York, but he handles everything the same way.” In truth, it is the football aspect of the trade — the Jets acquired Tebow for two draft picks — that is more jarring than the prospect of Tebow in Times Square. New York has been cleaned up in recent years, and the improbable ascension of Jeremy Lin, the point guard for the Knicks, has proved that the city is as good a place as any for a Christian athletic sensation to succeed. For the Jets, Tebow could emerge as a change-of-pace quarterback who never threatens Sanchez, excelling in a role that maximizes his talents. Or he could add another layer of madness to 1 Jets Drive, where Ryan, the team’s flamboyant coach, and outspoken players rarely hold back their often-divisive opinions."
