Encore un peu? Caricatures prise 2!

The Decline and Fall of the American Empire: Four Scenarios for the End of the American Century by 2025

"Future historians are likely to identify the Bush administration’s rash invasion of Iraq in that year as the start of America's downfall. However, instead of the bloodshed that marked the end of so many past empires, with cities burning and civilians slaughtered, this 21st-century imperial collapse could come relatively quietly through the invisible tendrils of economic collapse or cyberwarfare.

But have no doubt: When Washington's global dominion finally ends, there will be painful daily reminders of what such a loss of power means for Americans in every walk of life. As a half-dozen European nations have discovered, imperial decline tends to have a remarkably demoralizing impact on a society, regularly bringing at least a generation of economic privation. As the economy cools, political temperatures rise, often sparking serious domestic unrest."

De plus, il se plaint de la couverture médiatique de ses propos: "We have revolutionaries here in America speaking about an open violent revolution and no one will cover it!" Beck said. "Would they cover it if you had tape of Al Qaeda saying they're going to get out in the streets, they want violence? Of course you would!"Beck surmised that the media don't think that the threats he describes are sufficient enough to cover seriously.

Sarah Palin is wrong about John F. Kennedy, religion and politics

"Palin writes that when she was growing up, she was taught that Kennedy's speech had "succeeded in the best possible way: It reconciled public service and religion without compromising either." Now, however, she says she has revisited the speech and changed her mind. She finds it "defensive . . . in tone and content" and is upset that Kennedy, rather than presenting a reconciliation of his private faith and his public role, had instead offered an "unequivocal divorce of the two."

"Kennedy cited Thomas Jefferson to argue that, as part of the American tradition, it was essential to keep any semblance of a religious test out of the political realm. Best to judge candidates on their public records, their positions on war and peace, jobs, poverty, and health care. No one, Kennedy pointed out, asked those who died at the Alamo which church they belonged to."

Most books and documentaries about the American Civil War frame it as a saga that unfolded alongside a few legendary streams in Virginia and Tennessee, and across some hilltops in Georgia and Pennsylvania. But in fact, the war’s full story spans oceans and continents. The 19th-century United States was neither as isolated from world politics nor as impervious to overseas events as it is often described. For instance, Garibaldi, the hero of Italian liberation and unification, played a significant role – as an inspiration, though eventually almost as a direct participant – in our own country’s simultaneous struggle.

Abolitionists saw in Garibaldi a kind of Mediterranean John Brown. When William Cullen Bryant, America’s most revered literary figure, published a new poem hailing the newly liberated inhabitants of Italy’s medieval fiefdoms – “Slaves but yestereve were they,/Freemen with the dawning day” – it did not require much exegesis to realize that he was also thinking about bondsmen closer to home. Frederick Douglass, in his Dec. 3 speech in Boston, predicted that if the South seceded, “I believe a Garibaldi would arise who would march into those States with a thousand men, and summon to his standard sixty thousand, if necessary, to accomplish the freedom of the slave.”

LAPTOPISTAN

J'adore!

JUST after 4 o’clock on a Wednesday afternoon, as a dozen people clicked away on their laptops at the Atlas Café in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, half of a tree broke off without warning less than a block away. It crashed into the middle of Havemeyer Street, crushing a parked car, setting off alarms and blocking the street. A deafening chorus of horns rose outside Atlas’s window as traffic halted. An 18-wheeler executed a sketchy 10-point turn in the middle of a crowded intersection before a pair of fire trucks made their way through the traffic jam in a blaze of red. Chain saws roared, sawdust flew and the horns built to a peak. It was New York urban pandemonium at its finest.

Inside the warm confines of Atlas, separated from the chaos by only a thin wall of glass, not a soul stirred. A quiet mention was made of the falling tree, a few heads rose for a second, and then, just as quickly, they ducked back down. They all returned to whatever was on the other side of their glowing, partly eaten apples. On a day when the cafe Internet connection had already been down for four hours, and the toilet had been blocked for even longer, I thought I had seen these worker bees pushed to their limit. But I had underestimated them. Nothing could stir these people. They were not in New York; they were citizens of Laptopistan.
