Je suis toujours aussi fasciné par la capacité de Sarah Palin à séduire ses concitoyens en déformant l'histoire ou en s'attaquant à des sujets qu'elles ne maîtrisent pas. Grosse journée pour elle en ce lundi! On la propose comme présidente du parti Républicain et le Washington Post lui consacre un article. En lien avec quoi? Dans son nouveau bouquin elle se permet de juger un discours de John F. Kennedy sur la religion. Pas de mal à exprimer une opinion pourriez-vous me dire... Il semble cependant qu'elle ait tout faux.
Un extrait sur la position de Palin face au discours dans lequel JFK affirmait qu'il n'étais pas le candidat catholique pour la présidence, mais bien le candidat démocrate dont la religion était catholique:
"Palin writes that when she was growing up, she was taught that Kennedy's speech had "succeeded in the best possible way: It reconciled public service and religion without compromising either." Now, however, she says she has revisited the speech and changed her mind. She finds it "defensive . . . in tone and content" and is upset that Kennedy, rather than presenting a reconciliation of his private faith and his public role, had instead offered an "unequivocal divorce of the two."
La nièce de Kennedy lui répond de cette manière:
"Kennedy cited Thomas Jefferson to argue that, as part of the American tradition, it was essential to keep any semblance of a religious test out of the political realm. Best to judge candidates on their public records, their positions on war and peace, jobs, poverty, and health care. No one, Kennedy pointed out, asked those who died at the Alamo which church they belonged to."
La séparation de l'Église et de l'État n'est-elle pas clairement mentionnée à la naissance du pays? C'est ce qui m'inquiète au-delà de la bêtise d'une certaine faction républicaine, un mélange des genres accompagné d'un retour en arrière...
