Généralement les psychiatres s'abstiennent de commenter sur la santé mentale des hommes et des femmes politiques, tout particulièrement depuis 1973. L'American Psychiatric Association avait "développé" la "Règle Godlwater", une règle qui remet en question l'éthique professionnelle de spécialistes qui auraient pu évaluer le candidat Barry Goldwater. Pourtant cette année ils sont nombreux à intervenir publiquement sur la question dans le cas de Donald Trump.
