Mariage gai: un problème de plus pour Obama?

Obama ne pourra éviter la question ce soir... Je suis de ceux qui croient qu'il s'est déjà beaucoup "mouillé" sur la question.

"Obama won’t — and, realistically, he can’t — completely avoid the looming vote in Albany on a bill to legalize gay marriage in New York, but he’s unlikely to dwell on the topic or explicitly endorse the policy. More likely, he will cite his support for civil unions and reiterate his long-held position that states have the right to pass whatever laws they see fit, according to a person familiar with the White House’s thinking.

But even his biggest supporters in the LGBT community, whose political and economic influence far exceeds their numbers, are quietly tickled that their tiptoeing ally is being forced to walk the coals.

“It’s hilarious,” said a prominent gay Obama supporter who urges skeptics to credit his accomplishment — especially the landmark repeal of the military’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy — rather than focus on his holdout on gay marriage.

“He’s done far more than any other recent president on these issues. … But I can’t imagine he could possibly avoid talking about this on Thursday. He’s said his position on gay marriage is evolving — well, here’s his chance to share it with us.”

Thursday’s sold-out $1,250-per-person fundraiser, months in the planning, comes as the New York state Senate is one Republican vote shy of passing an Assembly-backed measure to legalize gay marriage. Negotiations have snagged over liability issues involving religious institutions that refuse to sanction same-sex unions, but Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo has said he will sign the bill into law.

Even officials with the Human Rights Campaign, a major gay rights group that has already endorsed Obama’s reelection, have been pushing the president to weigh in more forcefully on gay marriage. “I think you can’t help but hope that will factor into the calculation in terms of his further evolution,” said HRC Vice President of Communications Fred Sainz."
