Moubarak en procès: que le spectacle commence...

Une fois ce procès terminé, l'Égypte sera-t-elle toujours une alliée des occidentaux? L'auteur de l'article aborde cette question parmi d'autres...

"The demeaning spectacle yesterday of a sick 83-year-old in a hospital bed being wheeled into a cage in a court of law had overtones of a Soviet-era show trial. Most Egyptians wanted to see Hosni Mubarak face justice, but many seemed shaken by the sight of the autocrat who had ruled the country with an iron fist for 30 years brought so low.
However disagreeable the scene, the trial of the former president, along with his two sons and a number of associates, is an important staging post as Egypt emerges from its repressive past – though it would have had greater impact for truth and reconciliation purposes if it had taken place in a functioning democracy. That prompts the question of whether the country’s ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces will deliver on its promise to hold free and fair elections this autumn. The poll has been set for November, but the rules approved by the generals are inordinately complex; foreign election observers are also likely to be excluded from the process. This does not augur well: many Egyptians fear that the military will continue to pull the strings. Meanwhile, Islamist groups – by far the best-organised political entities in the country – are using the current hiatus to position themselves for power. Last week, more than a million Muslim fundamentalists took to the streets demanding an Islamic Egypt."
