"A quotation carved in the granite memorial to the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. will be changed after the inscription was criticized for not accurately reflecting the civil rights leader’s words. The Washington Post first reported on Friday the decision to change the inscription, “I was a drum major for justice, peace and righteousness,” a paraphrase of a 1968 sermon by Dr. King. The poet Maya Angelou had previously said the truncated version made Dr. King sound like “an arrogant twit.” A spokesman for the Department of the Interior confirmed Friday that Secretary Ken Salazar gave the National Park Service a month to consult with the King Memorial Foundation on an alternative inscription."
