"This past month — the kickoff of the general election — has seen a procession of ugly, salacious and (seemingly) unrelated disclosures: Revelations that a dozen or so members of Secret Service preparing for the president in Cartagena brought 20 or so hookers back to their hotel; the unfolding public relations nightmare of the 2010 General Services Administration junket to Las Vegas; And, the less noticed but deeply embarrassing admission by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta that he’s been charging the Pentagon $32,000 per flight to jet home to his northern California manse every few weeks. Then another: The Los Angeles Times’ publishing of two-year-old photos showing soldiers posing with the body parts of Afghan insurgents, just as Obama was set to head for a one-day jobs-focused trip to Lorain, Ohio. Democrats doubt the scandals will have a lasting impact on their 2012 chances, but presidential campaigns are all about atmospherics and these are lousy. Just as Obama’s operatives seize on anything that makes Romney look like a hopelessly out-of-touch rich guy, Republicans hope that the shadow of scandal obscures Obama’s larger message, as it did in Colombia. That would be a particular problem for a president whose chief selling point is no-drama competence and ethical purity."
