Canada’s oil sands represent 0.1 percent of worldwide greenhouse gas emissions. Our regulations are among the most stringent in the world.
Greenhouse gas emissions from Canada’s oil sands fell 26 percent a barrel between 1990 and 2011. We are investing in innovative technologies to further improve our environmental performance.
We have banned construction of new coal-fired electricity plants that use traditional technology. Coal-fired electricity in the United States alone contributes 32 times as much greenhouse gas emissions as the oil sands.
Canadians believe that our oil sands must be developed in a way that continues to build on world-class environmental standards and technologies while creating wealth and economic prosperity for Canada. We are doing just that.
This is a matter of energy security. The United States can choose between importing energy products from a trusted democratic ally and environmental leader or from less friendly countries with weaker environmental standards.
Canada’s approach to the responsible development of natural resources includes supporting jobs, economic growth, environmental protection and the energy security of North America.
