Joe Biden, le Schmoozer-in-chief

When a technical glitch allowed a radio reporter to overhear President Barack Obama’s words at a private fundraiser, an eager White House press corps was crestfallen to learn the disciplined president was saying exactly the same thing in private as he does in public.

Joe Biden … well, not so much.

In a Washington ruled by the regimented precision of the Obama presidency, Biden has emerged as a sort of schmoozer in chief, the gregarious yang to Obama’s remote yin. He spent last weekend in a water fight with children at a party he hosted for reporters at the Naval Observatory; one guest was overheard remarking that she’d have to warn her kids not to act that way around the president. And in a long, low-profile string of fundraisers around the country, first for Democrats and now for his own and the president’s reelection campaign, Biden is delivering a level of physical contact, personal connection and unpredictable gossip that used to be what donors paid for but which seems to cause Obama to recoil.

“They came up in different times in politics, and schmooze and press the flesh has been a lifetime of what he has learned to do,” said Michael Adler, a Miami real estate developer and Democratic donor who was the finance chairman for Biden’s 2008 campaign. Someone like Biden or the Michael Jordan of schmoozers, Bill Clinton, “really makes you feel for that moment that he’s really having a conversation with you — that it isn’t this remote guy that’s out there running the country and that he’s reached a level where he thinks he’s more important than you,” Adler said."
