Branch Rickey achète le contrat de Jackie Robinson: un autre 10 avril (1947)

 C'est effectivement le 10 avril 1947 que le président des Dodgers de Brooklyn annonce qu'il achète le contrat de Jackie Robinson qui évoluait pour les Royaux de... Montréal! Le projet de Rickey était secrètement en préparation depuis quelques années. Il a longuement préparé le recrutement du premier athlète noir à intégrer les rangs professionnels. Le choix de Robinson était lourd de conséquences, le premier ne pouvait échouer... Robinson a été confronté à la ségrégation, il a fait des études universitaires et il était un athlète dominant dans plusieurs sports. De saines habitudes de vie, une approche non-violente face à la ségrégation et un tempérament "contrôlé" vont faire de Robinson le candidat idéal. Voici un extrait du célèbre entretien entre les hommes qui mènera à la décision finale:

 " For three hours, Rickey harangued Robinson ... graphically illustrating the difficulties Robinson might face. He portrayed the hostile teammate, the abusive opponent, the insulting fan, the obstinate hotel clerk. Rickey challenged the black man with racial epithets and verbally transplanted him into ugly confrontations. "His acting was so convincing that I found myself chain-gripping my fingers behind my back," wrote Robinson." "In the face of this onslaught Robinson finally responded, "Mr. Rickey, do you want a ballplayer who's afraid to fight back?" [Rickey] had awaited this moment. "I want a player with guts enough not to fight back," he roared."
