"In an interview posted on the web while Mr. Netanyahu was en route, Mr. Obama told Jeffrey Goldberg, a columnist for Bloomberg View, that time was running out for Israel to make peace with the Palestinians, and that if the Israeli leader did not think a peace deal was possible, then “he needs to articulate an alternative approach.” The president’s comments surprised and angered Mr. Netanyahu, an Israeli official said, setting up a familiar dynamic for two men whose relationship seems forever stuck in a polar vortex.
In the Oval Office the next day, the president eased the tension with warm words about Mr. Netanyahu, and by all accounts the meeting went smoothly. But the contretemps reinforced the fact that Mr. Obama has fixed ideas about how best to pursue peace in the Middle East, and a far less solicitous style than his secretary of state, John Kerry, who has drawn close to Mr. Netanyahu over many hours of painstaking negotiations.
