It’s impossible not to link Carter’s remarkable post-presidential activism to that moment in November of 1980 when he was not only defeated as an incumbent by Ronald Reagan but completely buried, in one of the worst losses by an incumbent ever, garnering just 41 percent of the vote. The morning after, Rafshoon found Carter slumped in his chair with tears in his eyes in the Oval Office. “He said, ‘forty-one million, six hundred thousand people don’t like me,” Rafshoon recalled. “He gave the exact number.”
