Pictures of slain bin Laden: release (Chicago Sun Times)
Position éditoriale en faveur de la divulgation d'au moins une photo du corps de Ben Laden...
"Because the photos are said to be gruesome, it’s important to stress that America’s purpose in releasing them is not to offend or inflame passions. Eight years ago, when the United States released grisly photos of Saddam Hussein’s two slain sons, voices in the Arab world complained that our nation was ignoring a military tradition of not showing images of enemy war dead for propaganda purposes. There also were concerns in America that the move could come back to haunt us in future conflicts.
But this is no propaganda campaign. This is the documenting of history — the day our soldiers wiped out a mass murderer. We are not a blood-thirsty people. We do not burn our enemies in effigy or — at our best — revel in the violent death of any individual, even the world’s leading terrorist. It’s been quite a while since we tarred and feathered anybody.
In fact, bin Laden was buried at sea by American soldiers a few hours after his death in a ritual that showed great respect for religious traditions, despite the action of the man in life. His body was washed in accordance with Islamic custom, and then it was placed in a white sheet and a weighted bag before being eased into the sea.
We can never put 9/11 completely behind us. But we must one day close this horrific chapter in our national life.
Osama bin Laden is dead and gone. Let there be no doubt"
